Mississippians' right to Name, Likeness and Voice Act filed for consideration

https://www.actionnews5.com/2026/01/21/mississippians-right-name-likeness-voice-act-filed-consideration/

Mississippi lawmakers are proposing state-level protections that would include voices in Name, Image and Likeness legislation.

The Mississippians’ Right to Name, Likeness and Voice Act passed the Senate last session but is being re-filed along with a mirror-image bill in the House, according to Sen. Bradford Blackmon, the bill’s sponsor.

The legislation would allow victims to sue anyone who uses their likeness without permission and recoup any money made from unauthorized use.

“We’ve seen several cases where children in our elementary schools, our middle schools, our high schools, and our colleges have had their likeness digitally altered in videos or images, and often with damaging and long-lasting effects,” Blackmon said. “So, this is not theoretical. These are real kids in real classrooms facing real consequences from fake content.”

The article also quotes Grammy-winning blues musician Bobby Rush on how important legislation like this is for musicians.
