What he's getting rid of is all the crap hotels are using to get their properties listed higher on websites like hotels.com and travelocity.com when someone selects "view by price low to high." If you're charging, say, $300 per night and adding on $100 in junk fees, you'll be higher on the list (and more likely to be booked) than if you charge $400 per night with no junk fees.

What would an occupancy tax, voted on by the representatives of the people and going to the benefit of New Yorkers, have to do with hidden hotel fees, arbitrarily dreamed up by private companies and going into their own coffers?
