Few Voters Say Trumps Second Term Has Made the Country Better, Poll Finds
A majority of voters said that Mr. Trump had focused on the wrong priorities and that they disapproved of his handling of top issues, but the president still enjoys strong support from Republicans.

Less than a third of voters think the country is better off than it was when President Trump returned to the White House a year ago, with a wide majority saying he has focused on the wrong issues, according to a new poll from The New York Times and Siena University.
A majority of voters disapprove of how Mr. Trump has handled top issues including the economy, immigration, the war between Russia and Ukraine and his actions in Venezuela. And significantly, a majority of Americans, 51 percent, said that Mr. Trumps policies had made life less affordable for them.
All told, 49 percent of voters said the country was worse off than a year ago, compared with 32 percent who said it was better.
The survey also revealed the extent to which Mr. Trump has polarized the nation into its furthest partisan corners, with more voters seeing him as on track to be historically bad or good than merely below or above average. Some 42 percent of voters said he was on track to be one of the worst presidents in American history and 19 percent said he was headed to be one of the best.
Mr. Trumps own job approval rating stands at 40 percent, down three points since September. His disapproval rating has crept up to 56 percent.

(25,618 posts)Normal GOP polling is cult like levels of allegiance. Meaning, anything the GOP is for typically hits 80+%. For only 55% not to give the "correct" answer feels like bad news for team Trump. A lot of GOP voters off message. Indeed, the majority right now.

(4,523 posts)I know some GOPers who will always aver that Trump is great, that the rest of us are crazy... but then when I probe gently about how they really feel, they admit that he's actually not a good guy. They won't deny him or anything, but there's clearly a conflict in their hearts because they realize in some sense that he violates every value they used to hold.
I speculate that as soon as they get that he's also a big LOSER, they'll start peeling away.
I don't know what will be needed for them to realize that, but I think his support is pretty fragile.

(4,523 posts)most people I knew said they hadn't voted for Nixon (who had won 61% of the vote 2 years earlier).
Nixon, I think, is the person who benefits most from Trump. We're no longer saying he was the worst president ever! I even found myself saying, "Was Watergate really that bad? And Trump did establish the EPA. And he went to China."

(23,433 posts)Prior to this year most of his power was drawn from the fact that he still had a solid lock on the GOP. This poll shows that only 77% of Republicans currently think that he is merely a better than average president. Less than half of Republicans think he's a great president.
Meanwhile 84% of Democrats think he's one of the worst presidents of all time, and a total of 94% think he is a below average president. And 68% of Independents consider Trump a below average president compared to 26% who think he's an above average president.
With Trump in his fifth year, I think it's only going to get worse for him from here on out.

(39,070 posts)Polls show that fewer and fewer people identify by party.
Any polls showing whether or not those Republicans can find Venezuela on a map? Have they ever heard of Maduro? If they're just gleefully identifying with the Stick It To Those Liberals! party, their approval of Trump makes sense
