(151,281 posts)Here in the Twin Cities, most years have a couple of days below -20F. I've lived her since 2004, and I know I've seen those temperatures most of the Winters I've been in here.
It's damned cold, for sure, but somehow we survive it. I'm probably going to stay inside for a couple of days, though. Yesterday, I did grocery shopping, so we have plenty of food in the house. I worry about some folks in the area, though, who have poor heat or other issues.

But, 18 of our friends showed up and we all went to breakfast afterward. Only relative of either of us was DH's brother.
Sorry....comment just triggered the memory and I chose to share. Again, sorry.

(10,637 posts)Spoke with my nephew in Minneapolis last night. He says its a full-on military siege in Minneapolis. Its worse than you think, he said. The city was going on a city-wide strike today. Schools closed due to extreme cold. The place is crawling with ICE. He and some family are going on a cruise today: flying to Tampa, then on a boat. But they might not be able to get out because 1) the airport is crawling with ICE, and 2) the planes have a hard time taking off at the predicted -45 below wind chill.
We will get our first taste of near-freezing temps in S Texas starting Saturday.

(12,545 posts)I'm in the .5 to 1" ice storm area, so moving into a local hotel for the week (turning water off, running water and flushing to drain pipes/toilets, turning on emergency heat only, etc) and GTFO during the worst of this. I expect power will be out, and on Monday night it's to be 7 degrees. I feel this is the safest plan for me and my home.

Ocelot II
(130,568 posts)I had planned to attend the big demonstration downtown today but it got complicated because of the weather. There's a 1-mile march through downtown to the Target stadium for an indoor rally, which means people won't have to freeze their butts outside to listen to the speakers, but it also means more walking and standing around - you aren't guaranteed admission to the stadium, it will take awhile to get in, and they have some onerous rules about what you can bring inside. Considering the sad state of my tired old knees, which hurt more when it's cold, I might have to stay home and paint posters instead. With the right clothing the cold is manageable, but my knees aren't. *sigh*
I hope the ICE goons are totally miserable.
