These are happening in neighborhoods all over. We came out because because we couldn't just stay home. We couldn't not come out. And we're not giving up.

(14,780 posts)Its now on the leaders and law enforcement whether they will begin protecting the citizens or continue to stand silent in the face of this terrorist invasion.
Ocelot II
(129,729 posts)about their opposition to ICE. They have been anything but silent, but unfortunately state and local police have no power over federal law enforcement. The governor has called out the MN National Guard to assist the police in de-escalation.
quakerboy
(14,780 posts)Since when are federal employees exempt from law enforcement?
By your argument, if an fbi agent decides to hold up a gas station, local police cant arrest him. Its nonsense.
Every ice convoy to leave their hq could be accompanied/followed by a local pd vehicle. With body cams and vehicle cameras. Police officers do have the ability to arrest other LE who they personally observe breaking the law. They certainly can give testimony in court about what they personally observe.
I suspect if legitimate law enforcement was present to observe (as opposed to to collaborate) and enforce the laws, ice would get a lot less likely to blatantly break the law in their presence.
Sparkly
(24,867 posts)That wouldn't work, first because local LE is so vastly outnumbered by these anonymous, masked, untrained thugs. In addition, the Cosplaying GI-Joes are federal, so - someone correct me if I'm wrong - they sort of outrank the state if there were a conflict between the two, absurd though that is.
Local law enforcement is not collaborating - that is the very meaning of a sanctuary city or state.
quakerboy
(14,780 posts)But facts are that even in sanctuary areas police often find ways to help feds rather than uphold the law of their locality.
And at least as yet they do precious little to stand up for the citizens they are supposed to serve and protect.
Also, just to be real, law enforcement isn't sworn to uphold the law only if/when they outnumber lawbreakers.
Id also argue that if the police were to stand with the citizens, the citizens would stand with the police. And together they outnumber ice by a large margin.

(14,780 posts)Both waiting in politicians leading to deaths.
And fighting without fighting. Thats literally what the man they murdered today was doing.

(14,780 posts)really only state that he has tasked the national guard with protecting ICE.
Let me know when those national guard troops are there, facing the ICE terrorists (not the citizens that ice are terrorizing). Let me know when the local police or the local national guard prevent ice from throwing tear gas and flashbangs, or are at least in the way taking the brunt of those attacks to protect their fellow citizens.
So in short.. Not especially. I heard nothing in his words or propositions that seems likely to prevent or even slow ICE from their next murder.

(22,336 posts)I think the situation is more complex than you realize, and state and local officials do not have all the options you seem to think they do. It's sad that you seem to be set on blaming the victims (Minnesotans and their elected leaders) instead of the thugs that are terrorizing them.

(14,780 posts)I do have high expectations of elected officials and sworn officers.
Minesota Governors oath of office:
"I, [Name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Minnesota, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of Governor of the State of Minnesota to the best of my judgment and ability.
Mineapolis police officers oath of office:
"I, [name], do solemnly swear that I will support the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution and laws of the State of Minnesota, and the Charter and Ordinances of the City of Minneapolis;
That I shall, in recognition of my service as a peace keeper, first do no harm, that I will uphold and safeguard the sanctity of life, and that I will shield and protect my community from those who would seek to cause harm;
That I shall intervene in protest, both verbally and physically, if I witness anyone violating another's rights;
That I recognize those I serve are members of the human family worthy of dignity and respect, and my term in office shall be guided by my love of service to the community and the grace of humanity."
