Safety tips this winter for Minneapolis residents

The adage "Beware of Thin Ice" is obsolete. All ICE is dangerous, especially ICE that is thick and dense at the top.

Don't trip on ICE. You will be hurt badly.

ICE is very slippery. Avoid it at all costs.

Salt is good for keeping ICE away.

Be sure to bundle up in heavy clothes in case you encounter ICE.

Keep the heat on. It keeps the ICE away.

Don't just look around you - look up, too! ICE can come down on you from the eaves or the roof or even the air.

When on an ICE-covered lake, be very very careful where you step.

If you see someone injured by ICE, call 911 first.

Look Before You Step when ICE may be present.

Remove ICE and snow but only if it's safe to do so.

Be cautious when entering or exiting vehicles and use them for support if ICE is present.

Transparent ICE is not safe ICE.

Entrances accumulate ICE from foot traffic. Keep away from them.

Block ICE from entering your home by keeping doors safely closed.

Be careful of your surroundings in conditions where ICE might be present.
