Josh Shapiro Faces Democratic Backlash Over Claim Harris' Team Scrutinized Him for Israel Stance

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's revelation that he was asked if he was an 'agent for Israel' while being vetted by Kamala Harris' campaign – and his claim that the incident reflected the dual loyalty trope – is increasingly being perceived by fellow Democrats as politically motivated

WASHINGTON – Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's revelations last week that Kamala Harris' presidential campaign asked him if he had been a "double agent of Israel" caused a storm, with many quick to accuse the campaign of trafficking in tropes of dual loyalty. In the days since, however, Shapiro's grievances have been increasingly viewed with skepticism relating to both the menacing nature (or lack thereof) of such questioning, as well as Shapiro's own political motivations ahead of the 2028 presidential campaign.

Shapiro was considered a frontrunner to be Harris' running mate in her 2024 campaign, which could potentially have made him the first Jewish vice president in American history. In his memoir, published Tuesday, Shapiro shared the anecdote and claimed that Harris' team placed added scrutiny on his candidacy because of his Jewish background and historical support for Israel. In the eyes of Shapiro's supporters and former Biden administration officials outraged at the questioning, this double standard trafficked in age-old dual loyalty tropes that veered into antisemitic territory themselves.

This charge has often been levied against U.S. President Donald Trump by the same Democrats after the Republican candidate repeatedly claimed that faithful or loyal Jews don't vote against him. Amid the sharp criticisms – including from Biden's antisemitism envoy and Holocaust historian Deborah Lipstadt, along with her former deputy and longtime Democratic political operative Aaron Keyak – former officials and Shapiro's potential rivals have argued that the questioning does not reflect an unforgivable lapse in judgement, but is being filtered through his own political calculus.

"Asking a high-level appointee if they have ever been a foreign agent is a standard vetting question," former Biden chief of staff Ron Klain told Axios, citing Standard Form 86, which national security officials fill out during vetting and includes questions about foreign government interactions. Others have reported since that Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Harris' eventual choice, faced similar questions about his ties to China as part of the thorough vetting process – though the Walz-China questioning obviously lacks certain sensitivities included within the Shapiro line of questioning.

No backlash or controversy is very appropriate here.

Despite how candidates perceive it (I admit I might be offended too under similar circumstances) I think the country benefits by thoroughness. Politics is rough. The fewer surprises, the better

Or was there something 'particular' to the Shapiro questioning/vetting? Tone, tenor, intent .. ?

Shapiro said on CBS: "I understand they had a job to do, to ask me those questions. I think it went beyond just checking a box on a questionnaire."

Some of that may reside in 'the eye of the beholder' ...
But (and particularly given the tenor of the times .. ) I'm not sure if I'd be willing to dismiss out of hand ...

Any politician stupid enough to attack Kamala when he has to face the voters later in a Dem Primary, shouldn't be in the race. This isn't the 1st time he has said negative things about Kamala. Who the hell does he think vote in primary races? He has already lost many Black voters and other Dems concerned about the closeness of America to Israel.
