Will Chuck Schumer stand firm against ICE and Trump's fascism? Or is Susan Collins Chuck Schumer's spirit animal?

Jan 28 (Reuters) - Democrats in the U.S. Senate and President Donald Trump were making progress in talks aimed at ensuring that a dispute over immigration enforcement does not lead to a partial government shutdown, sources familiar with the talks said on Thursday.

“There have been very constructive discussions and conversations I've been part of, and so let's just say I'm hopeful," Senate Republican Leader John Thune told reporters.

Democrats have threatened to block funding legislation for ICE and several other federal agencies, which could trigger a partial shutdown when funding expires at midnight Friday.

Democrats are pushing to carve out funding for ICE's parent agency, the Department of Homeland Security, from the broader spending package, which would enable the Senate to ensure funding is not disrupted for the Pentagon, health programs, and other government operations.

The list of "asks" seems pretty modest.

No mention of "fire the guys with criminal history, or the ones who were at January 6, or the ones who can't read past a third grade level, or the ones whose social media is full of violent right-wing rhetoric."

Take that to the bank.

Language in the bill, or drastically reduced numbers are the only acceptable resolutions.
Make them line-item veto, and signing comment-proof

Probably will make a show of standing up for a few days (token resistance), then gather up the exact number of defections to vote for whatever horror the republicans have in mind, to keep everything rolling in whatever direction the big "donors" want.

I remember when I believed in government by the people and for the people....now, I'm old enough to realize that "the people" now really means "the billionaires".

Oh, and we're all going to get yelled at before long for not being sufficiently worshipful of Sen. Schumer.

I've have been harshly critical of him, but guardedly optimistic given his current posture.

Until we know, I say let's give him the benefit of the doubt. If he fails us (again) then it is another point on the line and it means that I will never again expressed guarded optimism.

It isn't like there is any moral ambiguity here, and the "asks" are largely ceremonial. Trump has nothing to lose by listening to Schumer's demands and a lot to gain. Basically, from my perspective, if we get concessions Trump will think this scandal is over, he will declare victory, and we will move on to some other atrocity. Hopefully the next atrocity will not involved State Sec murdering people on the streets.

So, I'm conflicted. Schumer has gained value in my estimation and Jeffries and his cadre of 7 un-whipped Democrats have lost.
