The Utah governor just signed a bill to expand his state's supreme court by two seats.

Conservatives have been angry at a series of judicial rulings, including one that safeguarded direct democracy in 2024 & one that struck down their gerrymander. 1st step of their retaliation.

after getting decisions they didn't like.

I remember Montana Republicans were openly talking about "reforming" the Montana Supreme Court after they struck down that state's abortion ban.

Was trying to bring the political tempature down. This does not seem to be a step in that direction.

Regarding the Supreme Court of only 9 Justices.

The country is divided up into 'Circuits', which represent multiple states. While some of the Circuits are very small (the earlier circuits, where the Circuit Judges would have to ride horses to all the areas they covered.)

As the country grew, and added more (larger) circuits, it really seems lopsided. Look at the 9th Circuit compared to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd:

There should be at least 1 for every Circuit, and possibly another for the FED/DC.

When Democrats regain control I think it would be appropriate to have at least Eleven Justices, and possibly one for the FED and DC (that would be an equal number, and I think it should be an odd number so there are no tie votes).

So yes, I would stand behind increasing the Supreme Court by 4.
