I never really thought about *why* there seemed to be such a difference between the Cuban vs Mexican latinos, but that makes sense!

Last week they were taken quickly out of town and we couldn't learn their names

And maybe by next week we'll hear they're Tren de Aragua members who helped Joe Biden steal the 2020 elections

I suspect that the bigger problem
is that they are nazi-wannabees,
regardless of their presumed heritage....

Human decency has nothing to do with racial heritage---

and the Spanish civil war--- well, the fascists WON it
(with help from HItler's Germany, and huge genocide against civilians!)

So unaware and cringe, you just want to fold in on yourself like a neutron star.

"Can you believe a person with brown skin is acting in such a way that I have not assigned for them in my mental categories?"

Almost as if - and this is going to be a weird one - non-white people are fully formed humans with their own experiences, priorities, goals, and choices that do not care whether or not it aligns with how white people think they should act.

Very few folks seem to understand that "Hispanic" is not a race or ethnicity. When filling out forms that request demographic info, my Latina wife has to choose "Hispanic" and then pick from "White, Black, Asian, Native American, and Other." She puts "Other" because her ancestors are from several of those categories.

Her brother (MAGA) puts Hispanic, White.

I've posted this over and over on DU and it's flatly disbelieved that a Hispanic would consider themselves white.

What's much more worrisome is that the DNC seems to be just as uninformed about this. And we see where that's gotten us.

PS I haven't discussed ICE with my Hispanic BIL but I guarantee that he would say "They're just trying to do their job removing all the dangerous criminals that Biden let in blah blah blah if you did nothing wrong you have nothing to fear blah blah why are these agitators interfering with LE blah blah..."

My Venezuelan neighbor said something similar the other day.

You note excellent examples in Hispanic communities and how they see themselves. We could do similarly for AAPI. How Filipinos see themselves is different from Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese diaspora in America. How people came over and within what cultural context matters. So lumping everyone together, "Hey, you all vaguely have the same skin color - you must think the same!" is this subtle, condescending racism that these communities sense and don't like. We threw away the Latino community because of this attitude towards them. "You're brown - don't you like immigration?!" (But hey, Trump's working hard to drive them right back in a Democratic direction).

I've said it a thousand times in a thousand posts on this site: "Have you ever actually met people?"

Filipinos tend to be blue collar and working class Catholic, extended family oriented, and a blend of socially conservative and liberal. The Vietnamese diaspora is shaped by the war and the refugees who came. The current Chinese diaspora is increasingly reflecting educational transfer among their middle classes. You look at that small sample and think, "Why do you think they'll all react similarly just because they're East Asian?"

And it's always a little strange, because it tends to come from white liberals. Even white people have these differences. A blue collar Irish Catholic family isn't going to be running around like they're New England WASPS who aren't going to even pretend to understand a Baptist Southerner.

We can recognize the variations in differences in white people just fine, but non-white people? Fuck it, throw them all together.

And then people are shocked - shocked! - when the brown person has an entire inner life that does not comport with their assumption of how they're supposed to behave according to rules laid down by, let's be honest here, extremely privileged white people who have the luxury to sit around all day and discuss these things for sport.

I can always, always, always tell when someone's social and familial circles are not very diverse. Because this mindset is always lurking in largely homochromatic spaces that content themselves with lawn signs rather than welcome mats.

Don't get me started on my experience decades ago at a supposedly very enlightened alternative private school founded and dominated by white academic progressives.

Example conflicts:

School: Our educational approach is the best and only approach for all children. We are a child centered school.
Me: It's not working for my ADHD child. Could we discuss some modifications that will help him thrive?
School: You should leave.

School: We need to increase the diversity of our student body.
Black family: We'd like to begin this parent-teacher meeting with a prayer for guidance from the Lord.
School: You should leave.

School: Tuition is too high and our teachers are paid too little.
Me: Maybe we should have some fundraisers.
School: Fundraising is elitest and talking about budgets ruins the magic here.
Me: High tuition is elitest.
School: You're ruining the magic.

among some democrats where they are unable to accept that Hispanics are NOT all one voting block. I see posts all the time convinced that because Texas's Hispanic population is growing, that the state will turn purple/blue! Actually, the opposite is happening. The fact that we are now a majority Hispanic state is WHY the state is trending more conservative--due to those conservative Hispanic voters.

Just like there are liberal white men in blue cities who vote Democrat, and liberal white women who are as progressive as they come, there are also super conservative while women, and law enforcement is full of problematic white men.

Same goes for Hispanics. You have AOC and other amazing progressives in the Hispanic community. But the Hispanic community also has lots of problematic conservative men, and they tend to gravitate towards places they can have lots of guns (like law enforcement.)
