That was the thought in an earlier thread today. It takes courage to do that, I know from experience.
50 years ago powerful people wanted to strip coal and frack for gas on our watershed. I got involved and led the largest number of people to ever attend our borough's council meeting. We formed a local group to protect our watershed.
My Democratic party county Representative asked me to run for Borough council. I live in a Magat town. I ran and won. Our council meets once a month and at my 2nd council meeting when discussing the stripping coal on our watershed I looked the solicitor right in the eye and stated that since his father was owner of the coal company he needed to recuse himself from those discussions. He became irate and stated that he would recuse when he decided it was proper. I looked around the table at my fellow Democrats, and they all looked down at the table.
We had an opening for council, a Republican died, we met, illegally, (Sunshine Act law violation) at our Democratic county Reps house. I had earlier suggested to our Rep that I wanted to nominate a businessman, a man who owned a grocery store in our town. I wanted to nominate him because I knew that he would have my back at council meetings. We all agreed at that illegal meeting that's who we would vote for. It really didn't turn out that way, but eventually we did the businessman voted on council.
In the end we didn't stop the mining and fracking (thanks to Dick Cheney) but we put so many restrictions on them that we protected our watershed.
I never accepted the notion that we have to run moderates in certain districts to win elections. No one ever told me we had to run progressives in certain districts. We need to run fighters with courage, and yes I got death threats in my small town.
My point is what I heard Jason Crow say last week on TV, he said there are 2 camps of Democrats, one camp wants to wait Trump out and beat him at the next election, one camp has courage and wants to fight Trump now. (paraphrasing) Those are not my words so don't alert on me. When I heard him say that it reminded me of my distant days on Borough council. those fellow Democrats sitting at that council table were good people, but they couldn't pull the trigger.
