November's 2026 mid term has become imperative for Democrats to gain control of Congress because...
According to Section 2 of the 25th Amendment:
"Whenever there is a vacancy in the office of the Vice President, the President shall nominate a Vice President who shall take office upon confirmation by a majority vote of both Houses of Congress."
The key point is "the President" can nominate someone for VP. - the President - not anyone else. And BOTH Houses need to agree on the President's Choice by majority votes. NO majority. No VP. No matter how many votes are taken so long as the result is the same...no majority.
If Democrats take both houses in 2026, in 2027 they can effectively keep anyone - any Republican - from becoming VP should the need then arise. We would have no VP until confirmed by Congress!
And if anything should happen to a President with no VP, the Speaker of the House will become President and that Speaker may not vote for him or herself lowering a current or potential Republican count.
Why this all matters!
The advantage is if Vance, as President, should suffer some "situation" as President for any reason and not be able to fulfill his duties and there is NO Vice President "due to politics", the succession devolves to the current Speaker of the House. And with a Democratic Majority, the Speaker in a Democratic Controlled House would be second and next in line for a Democratic Presidency. Let that sink in...Democratic Representatives!
This may be why the Right is so intent on fixing the election in 2026. This mid term may/will be more important than any ever before especially for the future of America as we "knew" it.
If Trump ceases to be President for ANY reason BEFORE the Mid Terms, the Republican House and Senate can and will probably approve whomever Vance wants provided they can muster a majority in both. And with some of these supposed "middle-of-the-road Dems" this country doesn't need that and can't count on certain Democrats doing the "right thing."
Trump needs to be President past the mid terms, then he can "leave."
IF...the above happens, things could be VERY different for America, Americans, Immigrants, Visitors, even Business and hopefully, very different for ALL those responsible for what has happened and is currently happening since January 2025.
But we need to take control in November. This may be the last hope for the Democracy Experiment.
Fiendish Thingy
(22,468 posts)They might block a particularly heinous nominee, but would not keep the position vacant for the remainder of Vances term.
There would be some behind the scenes negotiations and an innocuous bucket of warm spit would be put forth as the nominee.
My guess is it would be someone like former VA governor Glenn Youngkin.
