MINNEAPOLIS (AP) The Trump administration is reducing the number of immigration enforcement officers in Minnesota after state and local officials agreed to cooperate by turning over arrested immigrants, border czar Tom Homan said Wednesday.
About 700 of the roughly 3,000 federal officers deployed around Minnesota will be withdrawn, Homan said. The immigration operations have upended the Twin Cities and escalated protests, especially since the killing of protester Alex Pretti, the second fatal shooting by federal officers in Minneapolis.
Given this increase in unprecedented collaboration, and as a result of the need for less public safety officers to do this work and a safer environment, I am announcing, effective immediately, well draw down 700 people effective today 700 law enforcement personnel, Homan said during a news conference.
Homan said last week that federal officials could reduce the number of federal agents in Minnesota, but only if state and local officials cooperate. His comments came after President Donald Trump seemed to signal a willingness to ease tensions in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area.

(850 posts)Since MPD doesn't ask immigration status, is this just a performative thing? I'm not sure.

Definitely have to weigh the fact that they've been exposed as Nazi scum and that the whole anti-immigration policy agenda is collapsing under its own cruelty and infeasibility against that.

(6,481 posts)gets his way, 3,000 people per DAY would be captured. There's no way that so many folks are criminals.
I'm in Florida, and DeSantis is setting up a third detention center between east Orlando and the city of Cocoa, which is on the Atlantic Ocean. Who is to be detained in these lock-ups?
If I'm remembering accurately, the issue of procuring Walmart basements came up during the first drumpf administration. I chuckled at that because almost nobody has a basement in Florida. Anybody else recall that?

The numbers they are pulling only speak to how infeasible and unserious their leadership and task-setting is.
There are supposedly between 200,000 and 300,000 undocumented people in the Chicagoland area. Operation midway Blitz had netted 3000 over the course of two months, and many of those people were let go. Even if its the lower number (200,000) and 60% of those see the enforcement actions and choose to self deport, it would still take ICE/CBP about 60 months at their most aggressive enforcement level to "clear" the rest. That's with the most generous assumptions of actual numbers and projected self-deportations. In other words, what they propose to be doing would stretch far beyond the current administration at the most unsustainable level of deployment. And that's just Chicago.
And they don't even make those numbers, really.
The whole thing is a childish fantasy of Stephen Miller transformed into unworkable policy.

(4,532 posts)Officers are management.
Agents are trained.
People are random goons.
This article uses and confuses all three terms.
I'd be very worried if 700 Management personnel were being withdrawn, there's little enough management happening already. With fewer management, there could be a much worse problem than there already is.
Exactly who is being drawn down.
