I hear complaints that Bad Bunny doesn't sing in the King's English.

But is that really the problem? Is it because no one wants to hear an artist sing in Spanish?

There was a plane crash in an Iowa field 67 years ago this week. Killed along with Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and JR Richardson was rock icon Richie Valens.

Valens had the hit record "La Bamba", the first song written and sung in Spanish to chart in the US. It reached #22 and found its way to corner jukes from coast to coast. ...In Spanish,

Los Lobos remade the song in the '80s for the Lou Diamond Phillips movie La Bamba and it went straight to #1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there. People still love that song.

Valens' version was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". It is also included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's list of 500 songs that were influential in shaping rock and roll.

How is Bad Bunny different?

私は「上を向いて歩こう」の曲が嫌いです。アメリカ人が知っていると言う唯一の日本の歌だからです。なぜもっと日本の歌を知らないのでしょうか?

At least King Felipe of Spain does. I get tired of the built-in Anglocentrism in US, and the assumption that the whole country owes its existence to a handful of immigrants from a small, rainy island. Most of what is now the US was never British. The place where Bad Bunny will be singing on Sunday used to be a Spanish colony before it became part of Mexico. Today, the largest ethnic groups in Santa Clara county are East Asian, South Asian, and Mexican/Central American.

Anyway, being from Puerto Rico I don't think Bad Bunny sings quite in the King's Spanish (there are a lot of different regional varieties) but I'm looking forward to his show.
