Americans still in the dark about Trump's $2,000 tariff checks
In November 2025, President Donald Trump announced that lower and middle-income people in the country would receive $2,000 dividend checks from tariff revenues. The president initially claimed that the money would be given out by mid-2026. He later postponed the date and stated that the checks could arrive by the end of the year.
However, Trump no longer seems very sure about the timeline. In a new interview with NBC, journalist Tom Llamas asked the president when the common American can expect their $2,000 checks.
The 79-year-old replied, “We’d make it — I — I’m gonna — I’m looking at it very seriously. I’m the only one [who] can do it because I’m taking in hundreds of billions of dollars of money from tariffs.”
The anchor was not impressed by the answer and again inquired whether the public would actually receive the money. Trump then seemed confused as he made a contradictory statement by saying, “Oh yeah, sure. I can — I can do that. I haven’t made the commitment yet, but I may make the commitment.”
He then changed the subject and said his government has already paid $1,776 in warrior dividend to military personnel from tariffs, even though the the amount was actually paid from supplemental housing funding.
