Sadly, I must report that Trump actually managed to do a good thing somewhere along the way...

I pick up my Mom's prescriptions for her. One of them is for Jardiance, the oft advertised antidiabetic medication used to improve glucose control in people with type 2 diabetes. Last year, here in the Bay Area, it cost $750 for 30 pills (though her co-pay is only $20). Recently, I noticed that the cost had decreased by over $300 for the same 30 pills - no small chunk of change for someone without prescription drug coverage. I wondered about this price drop and learned that it was due to Trump striking deals with 16 drug companies, including the manufacturers of Jardiance.

Chalk it up to even a broken clock being correct twice a day?

2. I get my brand name epilepsy medication from Canada

My insurance doesn't cover brand-name medications if there is a generic available. Unfortunately, generics are NOT equivalent, and certain conditions, like epilepsy, require the active ingredient be spot on. I can get 90 pills of brand-name from an online Canadian pharmacy for under $200, whereas 30 pills of brand-name would cost me over $500 in the US.

I looked up Jardiance at the pharmacy I use in Canada, and here are the costs. I mention this not to disagree with your post that Trump might have actually done something good (broken clock and all), more to let people who don't have insurance, or their insurance won't cover brand-name, know that there are cheaper options.

drug type Jardiance Boehringer Ingelheim Canada 10 mg
30 - $164.17

drug type Jardiance Boehringer Ingelheim India 10 mg
90 - $265.14

drug type Jardiance Boehringer Ingelheim United Kingdom 10 mg

drug type Jardiance Boehringer Ingelheim Canada 25 mg

WASHINGTON -- The Biden administration unveiled Tuesday the names of the first 10 drugs subject to price negotiations in Medicare, including blood thinners and diabetes medications.

They are:

Eliquis
Jardiance
Xarelto
Januvia
Farxiga
Entresto
Enbrel
Imbruvica
Stelara
Fiasp and certain other insulins made by Novo Nordisk

The medications treat heart disease, certain cancers, diabetes and autoimmune diseases. Medicare enrollees currently spend thousands of dollars on these drugs, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

Once set, the negotiated prices take effect in 2026...

There were 18 big price cuts in the first few days of the year, according to 46brooklyn. That includes four drugs that were part of the first round of Medicare drug price negotiation —an initiative launched by the Biden administration as part of the Inflation Reduction Act.

The negotiations lowered some drug prices paid by Medicare, but many wondered whether that might also lead to lower prices for privately insured patients.

The new data holds some clues. Fiasp, an insulin product, got a 75% price cut in the commercial market, according to the 46brooklyn data. The drug's maker, Novo Nordisk, said it also cut the prices of other drugs, and its goal was to make them more affordable for patients.

AstraZeneca's Farxiga and Boehringer Ingelheim's Jardiance, both used for diabetes and heart failure, and the blood thinner Eliquis, made by Bristol Myers Squibb, also got price drops between 37% and 44%.
