Trump signs executive order quadrupling beef imports from Argentina

Washington — President Trump signed an executive order Friday that quadruples the amount of beef imported into the U.S. from Argentina under a new trade agreement with the South American country.

Argentina's Foreign Ministry wrote in a statement that the new agreement, which was signed Thursday, will "grant an unprecedented expansion of preferential access for Argentine beef to its market by 100,000 tons," representing an increase of "$800 million in Argentine beef exports."

Entitled "Ensuring Affordable Beef for the American Consumer," Mr. Trump's executive order said that domestic production capacity has failed to keep pace with increasing demand in recent years, leading to higher prices. The order notes that the cost of beef has soared, peaking at $6.69 per pound in December, according to the Federal Reserve. That is the highest level beef prices have reached since the Department of Labor started tracking prices in 1984.

"I determine that it is necessary and appropriate to temporarily increase the quantity of [beef] imports," the order says. "In addition, I determine that it is appropriate to allocate all of the increased in-quota quantity of beef, as established by this proclamation, to Argentina."

Mr. Trump previously prodded cattle ranchers to "get their prices down" in an effort to bring relief to consumers.

"The Cattle Ranchers, who I love, don't understand that the only reason they are doing so well, for the first time in decades, is because I put Tariffs on cattle coming into the United States," Mr. Trump wrote on Truth Social in October. "If it weren't for me, they would be doing just as they've done for the past 20 years — Terrible! It would be nice if they would understand that."

Same now with roasts. I just don’t buy beef it’s gotten so expensive.

The Argentina beef is not the same as American. Actually the US is unique in that most beef is finished with grain making it more marbled and thus more tender. Argentina beef is grass fed but not finished in feedlots. It’s a noticeable difference although still very good.

Grass-fed beef tastes better, it has a distinctly "beefier", meatier flavor. Some people call it "gamey", but, while I won't try to yum someone's yuck, TBH that's someone who's never had anything more intense than American feedlot beef; it's nothing compared to venison (which isn't gamey at all if it's harvested and handled properly), let alone wild boar or even moreso wild duck. It's also "healthier" insomuch as it has something like 3x as many omega-3s, and is leaner overall.

On the downside, it is leaner than feedlot beef, but that doesn't mean dry like (modern) pork or chicken; as long as you aren't cooking it past medium-rare it's pretty much a nonissue. If anything, it's nicer to get a strip that has less of a fat cap, there's more meat on the plate.

The real sticky wicket here is the cost, grassfed beef is usually like $2-3 more a pound than feedlot meat because it's widely considered more desirable…tripling the imports isn't going to make much difference in market prices if it's going to sell for $7 instead of $4.50.

Anyone who has been in Argentina for a visit will know their beef is incredibly good. Now, this move will screw beef farmers in the USA big time, but that is what they voted for. I don't eat beef anymore, and a lot of people are getting away from it.

I wonder what kind of a deal trump has with Milei, they must be taking commissions from this deal.

They had Mad cow disease all the way up until 2011. Then they started vaccinating their cattle and it has helped..... some. I wonder what anti-vaxxers think about eating vaccinated beef???

They regularly use antibiotics though they are trying to cut back. China destroyed tons of Argentina beef due to the detection of illegal antibiotic use.

About 70% of Argentina beef are finished in feedlots. So don't think you are getting grass raised beef.

Argentina does most of what the US does to their average beef but with the added bonus of having corrupted and ineffective agriculture standards.

They are grass fed it is so much better than commercially available beef and so far the price is not much more.

It is all we buy, my chilli is so much more flavorful with their ground beef.

Never had a bad cut from them.

I love lamb, but the cost of a lamb chop compared to a t-bone used to mean that I would only treat myself to the lamb on special occasions. Now, the situation is reversed! Except that they are both MUCH higher than a good chicken thigh -- I can get 10lb bags of quarters for $8.90, sometimes less. For 89 cents a pound, I eat a LOT of chicken!

some goat. Make sure it’s not a billy goat. I try to avoid most red meat. I’ll eat it if served but not buy it. I include wild game I harvest myself.
Most of the meat I eat is fish and foul. Canned sardines are high on my list and buy a bunch when on sale. I try to read labels on everything I buy.

Highly likely that many of he wealthy in Argentina are descendants of Nazis or Nazi collaborators.

But given that we know mango Mussolini is a descendant of a collaborator, as are musk and Thiel this just seems entirely on brand.

It is really market driven. If the price goes up, they produce more. Problem is this takes some time. Takes a year or so for a farmer to up their production. Have to breed, raise and finish beef cattle.
Now if beef and milk producers got together in something like a union, they wouldn’t suffer those large market swings.

All because Americans can’t stop their addiction to beef, an unsustainable and resource inefficient industry.

Bring on the increased methane emissions to just get it all over with on this sick human experiment that ruined Eden.
