General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWell, I'm all in for this. According to a NBC news, a cup (or 2 or 3) of coffee or tea a day
reduces your risk of dementia. Those who drink the most caffeinated coffee have the lowest risk of the disease.
Apparently, this is a new "long awaited" study.
Throughout my life, I have struggled with trying to control my caffein intake. Was it all for naught?
Oh well, I currently drink 2 or 3 cups a day, so I will keep on keeping on without the guilt, I guess!

(22,414 posts)Another post here on DU linked to a study that cream also lowers the risk of dementia. https://www.democraticunderground.com/122895060
Study excerpt: People who consumed more than 20 grams of full-fat cream per day also showed a lower risk of dementia overall, ranging from 16%24%.

But I have to exercise moderation.

As for the amount consumed, I cut down to about 3 cups a day when I retired.

(55,180 posts)Nutritionists have a lot to answer for. 1933 they added vitamins to flour. In 1944 they raised the dose and standardized them. Through 1964 they promoted trans fats however you wish to call them - oleo, margarine, shortening - and advised low fat dairy through the 1980s. Cancer fed on protein so moderate your intake, avoid heart disease so moderate dairy fat. Seed oils were mostly unsaturated, so eat them. Peanut oil for frying French fries and turkeys.
As a result of the obesity that produced, all of it has been reversed. Sugar and carbs are the current enemy. They increase the fat uptake and cause inflammation. So go Keto or go Mediterranian or something similar, every fad doctor has one.
Too little coffee was a problem? Enjoy, get in touch with your gut and vagus nerve, feed what you crave. Your body is trying to tell you something. If you crave junk food, something's out of whack.
BTW cold sauerkraut is popular. The beneficial bacteria dies when it is heated.

(23,087 posts)If you wait a few months a study will come along which "proves" just the opposite.

(23,087 posts)I avoid caffeine entirely because it interferes with sleeping. I do drink decaf coffee. But I like studies which say that this is a good thing. I don't believe anyone really knows.

(12,120 posts)I don't think anyone really knows either.
This Study was probably funded by the Coffee Corporations of America.........
For the life of me, I cannot begin to understand why the masses plop down four bucks for a cup from Starbucks/???????
Or for that matter......... why people pay for BOTTLED "TAP" water....

(8,817 posts)while providing other benefits from its antioxidants. So you can start with a cup or two of coffee to get you going, and follow up with green tea into the early evening. Follow directions for brew temp and time as higher temps and longer steeps can reduce the benefits.

(25,001 posts)when I told him about this post. He has a much lower tolerance for caffeine than I do, and gets "interesting" as we put it (aka agitated) if he has too much. So he said he would stick with his single cup of coffee in the morning, and tea later "because of the antioxidants".

(2,819 posts)For many, too much caffeine brings on certain sleep deprivation, and that can be just as bad (or worse) than dementia.
For me, caffeine triggers tinnitus.
But I do believe in the beneficial effects of antioxidants in coffee and some teas. So I try to find the "right amount" of coffee and tea that still allows me to sleep. And I have no doubt that this is better for me than anything containing aspartame.
