Political observers raged over the weekend after the New York Times reported that FBI Director Kash Patel personally ordered local prosecutors to cease investigating the death of Renee Good because he feared it would contradict President Donald Trump's version of the killing.

The order came from Patel and other senior officials who worried that pursuing a civil rights investigation — by using a warrant obtained on that basis — would contradict Trump’s claim that Good “violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer” who fired at her as she drove her vehicle. Several insiders shared the account with the news outlet.

That story stirred up a frenzy among onlookers, including former prosecutor Richard Signorelli who said, "She was intentionally murdered on video! Where the hell are the MN prosecuting authorities in all of this. I'm requesting that Tim Walz formally request that Keith Ellison take over & prosecute the murderer STAT."....

Carla Marinucci, a veteran political writer, added, "Outrageous cover up at the highest levels."

Political commentator Mark Bland additionally said, "Ooh this is bad. A STAND DOWN ORDER on the investigation of Renee Good from FBI DIRECTOR Kash Patel! Documented proof it happened. This Dept of Justice is not working in 'good faith' for the American people. That is their job."

I'm starting to think we need a Constitutional Amendment to create a "DoJ" branch of government, wherein we vote the leaders in, but there's no political parties intrinsic to the process, and instead of an AG there's a panel of like 15 of them, created through ranked choice voting or similar.

Trump's complete corruption of DoJ has pretty much proven the current system of Executive Branch control of DoJ is no longer viable, IMHO.

11. No, Congress doesn't have that power. The state could bring obstruction charges...

...if their investigation was impeded, but it would be pretty novel and face a huge challenge in court since it would have to be determined to be out of Patel's scope of lawful duties or it violated state law.

It would take a Constitutional amendment to create a fourth branch of government, but how that would work would be complicated--and 20th-century amendments averaged 394 days to ratify. Given the current polarization and disfunction of our politics, it seems almost impossible that an amendment of this sort would ever get passed--much less ratified.

But Congress has the power to make the DOJ far more independent. The DOJ wasn't created until July 1, 1870, following President Ulysses S. Grant’s signing of the Act to Establish the Department of Justice on June 22, 1870. Congress could change the way the DOJ works if it had the vision and willpower--creating all kinds of checks and balances and accountability within the department. This seems like a much more likely path.

Let's hope it happens after the midterms!
