My cancer update, not pretty

As many of you know I went to the Doctor's office Jan. of last year with a small tender lump on my jaw. I found
out yesterday at the Doctor's office I weighed 265 lbs that visit, today I weigh 205, losing most of it in the last
five months.

To refresh, the cancer center took 5 months to get any treatment started and they put me on an auto-immune
treatment once a month for 8 months. Finished those late Dec., scheduled me for a CT & PET scan an hour apart
Jan 20. Meet with my 5th new cancer Doc the 28th to review the scans, in addition to the lymph node surrounding
my right carotid artery there are now 6 more lymph nodes in my neck area growing plus the cancer is 4 times the
size it was a year ago. And he wanted to get me started on more auto-immune treatments right away, as politely
as I could I reminded him I'm sicker today than I was before all the treatments. He referred me to the head cancer
Doctor.

I meet with him & his head nurse for over 2 hours yesterday, looking over my CT & PET scans he believes the
cancer has gone back into my vocal cords and even up into my nose. He got me scheduled with the ENT docs
this coming Tuesday to put the scope down and look at my vocal cords to see if they are cancerous, and if they
are any future treatment will get complicated.

The day after the 2 scans I got real sick, peeling chapped lips and blowing a lot of red snot out of my nose, watery
eyes plus being really tired, I was thinking it was a reaction to the radio active dyes that were used, Doc & Nurse both said it wasn't that and encouraged me to go see my family Doctor. Got an appt with her yesterday afternoon and
glad I went, she believes I picked up a bug the day of my scans, gave me a couple prescriptions that appear to be helping, so that's a little good news.

Any suggestions for fating foods, Doc said I need to put weight back on.

I am so sorry you are having to deal with it all.
I would suggest some things that might help your overwrought immune system. Perhaps you could manage a smoothie made with real Greek yogurt, banana, some pure fruit juice, and frozen fruit (berries, mango, cherries, etc. are good options) and a small bit of pure local honey. Blend away and drink!
I did this when I had an awful autoimmune flare that knocked 40 lbs off my normal sized frame and had me hospitalized a few times during. The drugs they prescribe are so hard on the gut. You need to get it calmed down and then eat things like eggs and toasted sourdough bread with butter, miso soup, and whatever else is appealing to you. Dark chocolate is nice, too.
Meanwhile, love to you today!

Most of the stuff (chiobani, etc.) that are marketed as greek yogurts use lots of lecithin, guar bean gum, carageenan, etc. Our guts aren't designed to handle that.

My last trip to the hospital they fed me so much un-natural food I just didn't eat. Artificial sweeteners, fake yogurts, fake scrambled eggs, salt substitute (and my potassium levels tend to be high.)

Ditto for ice cream. Most of the name brands have candy flavors now. Yechhhhh. Whatever happened to real ice cream?
I make ours. I make our butter, too. I have sourdough starter in the fridge and make all our breads and buns with natural flours. Even the cinnamon buns!
We grow herbs in pots and use them liberally.
Whole, real foods.

So sorry that you are suffering so!

Depending on what you can tolerate food-wise, go with some saturated fats and SOME starch-like things, potatoes with meat and gravy, some solid veggies with it like carrots or whatever you like. You need rich calories so go with real foods, use butter on things. Those will help.

Also, best to eat a little several times than eating a lot a couple times a day. Take to nibbling on stuff throughout the day, take plenty of clear fluids like water and tea.

Sweet potatoes doused in maple syrup
Pistachios, cashews, and walnuts for snacking

Maybe ice cream would be a good thing to add, it shouldn't be hard on the digestive system and is delicious on top of it all.

Here's a recipe of mine that might help you put on some weight, I have to limit myself in eating it as it does add to my weight if I'm not careful.

Homemade goulash

2 pounds lean hamburger
2 tbsps olive oil
canned or fresh mushrooms ( I don't measure, I just add as much as I think works)
2 tbsps minced garlic
1 medium chopped onion
Homemade beef gravy
Montreal Steak Spice to taste

Heat the olive oil, add the garlic, onions and mushrooms in a large frying pan with high sides, cook until soft.
Add the hamburger and continue to cook at medium heat until the hamburger is completely cooked.
While you are cooking the hamburger, make your homemade gravy;

Gravy recipe

2 cups beef broth with reduced salt
mixed flour and water ( I put 2 - 3 tablespoons of flour in a jar, add just enough water to make a nice mix and then shake it until it is completely mixed, add more water if needed so it isn't too thick.)
2 - 3 drops of Kitchen Bouquet

Bring the beef broth to a boil, add the flour and water mixture a little at a time stirring vigorously until it makes a nice gravy, not too thin or thick, add the Kitchen Bouquet and stir. Add warm water a little at a time if gravy is too thick and reduce heat to cook until the hamburger mixture is ready.

Add the gravy to the hamburger mixture, stir in the steak spice and cook at a reduced heat for about 15 minutes. Serve over mashed potatoes made with butter and whole milk.

It is delicious and my grandchildren love it.

On one of the morning shows, a celebrity chef used cream cheese in their mashed potatoes (rather than milk) along with chives. It is delicious! I add garlic too. I also use cauliflower in place of potatoes (making it keto or low carb). It becomes an an absolutely yummy comforting side dish or base for your beefy ghoulash goodness, or other beef dish.

103. I add chives to my potatoes as well depending what I am serving them with...
Sun Feb 15, 2026, 12:29 PM
Feb 15

and, yes, cream cheese and sour cream also work very well in the potatoes for sure. The nice thing about this recipe is it is very easy to add different ingredients to the base without it causing any problems. I also serve a medley of steamed veggies with it; carrots, cauliflower flowerets and broccoli. You can also make a cheese sauce to pour over the veggies but, fair warning, it does make the whole meal very rich so I tend to mix them with butter and pepper instead.

tumor shrinkage, and health-improving remission. As to suggestions re: foods, I would strongly suggest a consultation with a nurse/dietician who can design an eating program that will take into account your current and future needs--including if soft or liquid diet might be needed intermittently. But, healing and recovery are really influenced by nutrition, so those fruit, vegetables, lean meats and yes, probiotics (e.g., yogurt or other fermented foods)--and as minimal processed a diet as possible--are really important. If necessary all can be blended. If you can buy the produce and thoroughly scrub yourself, followed by a lemon juice rinse, you may well be protecting yourself from a lot of food-borne bacteria seen in recent years in packaged salads. You certainly don't need to risk that.

I wish you all the best, KS Toronado. Please keep us apprised and know that we are sending healing thoughts to you.

My salivary glands were basically destroyed and my taste buds were jacked up. Everything tasted like dirty socks. My doctor had wanted me to have a feeding port put in , but I refused. I would also focus on adding muscle.

Not knowing anything about you other than this post ...
maybe it means walking around the block
maybe 2# hand weights
march in place
getting out of a chair, sit back down, get back up again 3-4 times.
moving around in a pool or therapy pool (which might even be covered by insurance if prescribed)
stretching (gently and only if you know how to do it without injuring yourself)
maybe something more substantial
It all depends on whether you were an exerciser before the treatment.

When adding weight, better it include at least some muscle. Movement nourishes the body with nutrients in the blood (protein, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, and oxygen). Also, good for the mind, mood, neurotransmitters.

Again, I know nothing about you. If this advice is impractical, I apologize.

I'd like to add bone broth homemade if possible. Get some beef soup bones , a can of beef broth and add salt and pepper, carrots, onions and celery and cook with water for a couple of hours. Drink or have with saltine crackers. You can make a chicken one too the same way. (I usually add a half cup or so of Morgan David Elderberry wine to my beef broth)

By the way if you don't feel like chopping the veggies, don't leave them whole, doesn't really matter. Another aside cooked celery is very good for you backed, boiled, roasted all good. Its nutrient-dense and low-calorie , providing high fiber, potassium, and vitamins A, C, and K

Do you like desserts? If you aren't diabetic or prediabetic, you can indulge a little more. Weight-gain diets can be tricky because you don't want to cheat yourself of healthy healing foods in exchange for gaining weight either. A lot of good suggestions above.

Don't lose your spirit and keep givin' em hell!

When I was running marathons (decades ago ...) I liked pasta and would add in lean chicken and peas for protein. My very favorite was always my mom's tuna casserole, with cheddar cheese topping it all. Carbs and dairy should do it. Cheese and peanut butter are 2 things I've always liked that my doctors are not thrilled about (now, after having children, my weight is much higher than it used to be). My running was done when I was diagnosed with arthritis, and then I had a major blood clot 5 years later. So, I've had my share of doctors as well & still see the hematologist annually. I really hope they are able to successfully treat your cancer.

My son has been dealing adnoid cystic carcinoma for years. Sounds like your cancer has infiltrated similar areas as his did.
He finds that foods like ice cream, mac and cheese and fish (sashimi) helped him keep his weight up. He has trouble swallowing due to surgeries and radiation so these type of foods are easier for him to swallow.
Stay strong and if you need to vent feel free to pm me.

To contend with. When I was a beanstalk kid, I loaded up on baked potatoes to fill out, but I remained skinny. As an adult I learned that it is the baked potato toppings (butter, sour cream, crumbled bacon, shredded cheese, chives) that would have filled me out. I hope you find something that tickles your palette. You have all my best wishes for your health.

they removed the lymph nodes first and then 7 weeks of radiation
that was 10 years ago
it takes a lot of energy to keep up with the appointments and treatments
diet is very important for you now - don't eat junk if possible
no sugar in anything, no simple carbs if possible
sweet = fruit and organic if possible
finally your attitude is everything - no matter how hard, drive the negative thoughts out as soon as they show up

56. Ideas for weight gain
Sat Feb 14, 2026, 05:24 PM
Feb 14

Before I start, let me say that I feel so bad for you. There was a time when I was very ill and couldn't gain weight, but I can't imagine how bad it would have been to have that problem AND cancer on top of it.

I don't see how the doctors expect you to gain weight, when your body is under so much constant stress. However, I will chime in with some suggestions, in the hope that they will help.

Peanut butter, preferably natural or organic, is excellent for weight gain. Sumo wrestlers keep their weight up by eating a great deal of white rice. Pasta is also good for weight gain. But please make sure that you eat more than just foods to make you gain weight. It's always important to eat a healthy, well-balanced diet, especially when you are ill.

I wouldn't recommend eating a lot of junk food, because even if it did cause weight gain, it would stress out your body more. You are already having enough problems with the stress of cancer and the cancer treatments.

Wishing you all the best ❤️❤️❤️❤️

Five months? That is terrible.

I waited four months, and then my primary doc found me a cancer center close to home that had me in after a few days. They knew my name on my second visit. Also, I was so discombobulated on my first visit that I lost some things out of my wallet. One was a credit card. The cleaning staff found my stuff and it was there waiting for me.

Getting treatment started will help. May the outlook be better than you think.

Anything with high fat, ice cream, whipped cream, sour cream, cream cheese and butter to begin with. Chocolate lots of chocolate. Get some blue tea, made with the blue pea flower from Thailand and Indian, anything blue has cancer fighting properties. Steak is high in fat and protein. Nuts are high in fat, especially peanuts. Cheeses and donuts. Cakes and cookies. Try and eat organic. This is what they told my parents when they had cancer except the blue tea.

78. The stress from tRump made be drop a ton (down to 81 pounds)
Sun Feb 15, 2026, 01:05 AM
Feb 15

In less than 1 year and I told my doctor that I would disappear before Xmas. He thought I was kidding but I was serious and by Xmas I was 81 pounds. He is a Dem who also hates tRump and he is super skinny so he shouldn't talk when he said he thought that there was more to it (like dieting and not stress related weight loss).
I made a big error and tried to eat super fatty foods which I normally never eat at Christmas time. I thought it would be OK, why not? Well, I found out why not!

At Xmas I ate my mother's beef wellington with puff pastry, etc and a few days later I ate an appetizer of red pork belly at a wedding dinner I usually don't eat red meat or pork (not a fan of the flavor).
After Xmas I got super bloated and after the wedding dinner I got much worse and super fast. I looked Like I was 8 months pregnant and felt that sore and uncomfortable for 3 weeks straight. It was like I had a soft ball in my abdomen. I couldn't even poke my belly...hard as a rock. After 3 weeks of this I tried to figure out if the red meat I ate could have caused this reaction (I was trying to problem solve for weeks, process of elimination) so I Googled "does red meat cause irritable bowels?" And it turned out IT DOES!

From what I gathered the amino acids in high fat meats cause reactions in the bowels and this was the source of my discomfort.

So i suggest avoiding fatty red meats to gain weight unless that is a normal part of your diet.

To gain healthy weigh eat a lot of nuts (high fat) or butter on everything, not sugar. Sugars can screw up your blood and your teeth so avoid that as a weight gain source. Fried anything will add weight so you can eat all the junk food you want. Look at tRump as an a
example.

I don't have any suggestions to offer specifically for cancer, but when my aging mother was getting very thin and having less of an appetite, her doctor's one suggestion was this: Locate the ice cream with the highest milk fat content I could find, and have her enjoy as much as she wanted! Just for the high calorie count! Fortunately she liked ice cream!

I haven't read through all the comments so I'm sure you've received better suggestions from people more experienced in this area of fighting cancer. Keep pushing your doctors to stay on top of this. I hope you get some positive news from the ENT docs on Tuesday. I wish you strength, resilience, positive persistence, and all the ice cream (or whatever other high fat and calorie food) you desire!

You've probably read all about diet & how your gut determines so much of your health, but I'll second that. I have a wicked sugar addiction & when I fall off the wagon, which happens more than it should, I definitely feel worse. Your gut loves fiber & fermented foods, so don't forget those. If you feel up to exercise, moving always helps. Keep a positive attitude—not easy, I realize, but try. And stay connected with your network!!

The page below especially for a couple of tips:

https://www.lungevity.org/blogs/how-to-gain-weight-during-cancer-treatment

Eat often. The goal to promote weight gain and combat a poor appetite is to eat regularly throughout the day. You may be used to eating only 2-3 times per day, but while you are actively fighting cancer, it is recommended to eat at least 5-6 times daily. Eating often can stimulate your appetite and provide additional calories to encourage weight gain. If you are not hungry, it is hard to remember to eat. Try setting an alarm on your watch or phone to remind you to eat a meal or snack.

-snip-

Drink your calories. 100% fruit juice and milk or milk alternatives can provide hydration, while also providing extra calories. When you are not feeling like eating or having nausea, liquids are usually easier to consume than solid foods. Smoothies and nutritional drinks are good options for high calorie snacks in between meals. If you are experiencing diarrhea, gas, or bloating from your cancer treatment talk to your dietitian about the best kinds for you.

Stay on a schedule and plan ahead. During your cancer treatments it is important to start an eating and drinking schedule and stick with it. Drinking your fluids in between meals can prevent filling up on fluid during meal time. Planning your meals out the day before can not only increase how much you eat, but also help promote weight gain and improve your nutritional status. Utilize friends and family to help you plan ahead and stay on track.
