You work your way up the hill on skis (and skins), then ski back down.

(5,053 posts)those are my absolute favorites!
Easy--- they have "short programs" and "long programs"---
add a "medium program"--- and perhaps an "extra-long program"!

(12,186 posts)Tracing intricate patterns on the ice requires real edge control and used to be about 1/3 total score up until the 1970s. Id rather watch that than curling!
Or maybe jumping-only competitions have all the competitors do the very same jump and may the best jump win. Or spins only who can spin the most times or do the fastest spin.

(5,053 posts)until the 1980's--- but 'couples skating' seduced me---
I always found them rather 'erotic'!

(1,021 posts)The skaters were judged on the figures made in the ice.
Deviations from the target shape were measured.
It appeals to me because it is more objective - as opposed to say style points (for example, ski jumping), or judges' rulings on who pushed or blocked who first (looking at you short track skating (aka roller derby on ice)), and other events.

(17,568 posts)It's the old, traditional 'Lick the Leader' competition!
Donny is outside - dropped trousers - clear iced surface ahead.......
'Olympic' champions crawling - hoping to get a winning record for 'time with tongue attached'.............
And in the lead, crawling up to make 'Honor for the Great One' - tongue wagging and ready for the challenge..............
(As reported by Faux Sports):
It's JD in the lead, leaving a 'mascara' trail on the ice......
And close second is Pam Blondi - but her hair keeps getting stuck in her mouth as she keeps licking wide swipes with her tongue in anticipation of planting a winning 'kiss!'
And ohh, there's Krispi Gnome, using a dog-scope to help her focus in on her target but getting slowed down by her hair attachments getting frozen to the surface!
But wait - coming up from behind (ooh, bad call there!) is Senator Lindsey - and he's just crawling ALL OVER those ahead of him and looking like another WINNER in the Golds!
AND HE WINS!!!! THE BEST 'LICK THE LEADER' in the history of the Olympics!
Said Senator Graham after his amazing win: "I knew I could "lick them all - just blew them all away!"

Ok, yes, he fell, but did you see the three and a half somersaults with a double twist on the way down? Style points!

(53,206 posts)The games will be decided by how many Gordie Howe hat tricks (one player scores a goal, makes an assist and gets into a fight in the same game) and Double Gordies (a player on each team score a goal and an assist, then fight each other) are recorded.
