(297,145 posts)Mitch McConnell says 'no room for doubt' Trump tariffs were 'illegal'
Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., a former longtime leader of his party in the Senate and frequent Trump critic, said in a statement on the Supreme

Court's ruling that the decision "reaffirmed authority that has rested with Congress for centuries."
As a matter of policy, the empty merits of sweeping trade wars with Americas friends were evident long before todays decision," McConnell's statement said. "The American people already know that when Washington throws up artificial barriers, building and buying here at home become more expensive. Kentuckians whose livelihoods depend on auto manufacturing, agricultural commodity markets, or demand for bourbon whiskey understand this painful reality better than most."
McConnell added that the Constitution and the court's decision had now left "no room for doubt: the use of IEEPA to circumvent Congress in the imposition of tariffs already without precedent is also illegal. "

(9,544 posts)we will never see the U.S. fully repaired in our lifetimes. The damage to our domestic operations and international relations is so far gone that it will take a couple of generations or more to patch up, if that's even possible.
pat_k
(13,546 posts)...the passage of universal health care, a completely reformed tax system that actually asks those who benefit most from a strong public and private sector to contribute the most to ensuring the well-being of everyone with whom we share this nation, sweeping immigration reform that we've desperately needed for decades, completely reformed programs that provide essential building blocks that enable people to escape poverty and truly thrive, basic income to guarantee a level of human dignity in an economy in upheaval with the consequences of AI, and more.
Our government and economy has failed to serve all Americans for decades. On that, MAGA and non-MAGA from across the political spectrum agree. The nightmare of our present has made it clear that the seemingly insurmountable gap between the few haves and the many havenots is not only intolerably immoral, it is incredibly dangerous and utterly unsustainable.
Perhaps the example of an engaged and angry public standing against the trumpublican insanity will inspire a renewal of citizen engagement to such a level that we actually achieve meaningful change that moves us leaps and bounds down the path to a more perfect union.
The bottom line is that NOBODY knows what the future holds.
misanthrope
(9,544 posts)it will require Constitutional reform and I don't see that getting done. There will need to be irrevocable changes made to election funding, SCOTUS ethics, more detailed separation and specific delineation of powers, as well as other things that escape me currently.
pat_k
(13,546 posts)Where there is political will, a way is found.
I have no idea what the future holds. I just think we need to take care with predictions of doom. Sure, we may be doomed, but perhaps it's a turning point for the better. Just as things seem worse than we could ever imagine, the future could hold something better than we can imagine.
I always try to keep in mind that when we forecast doom, or declare that "everything is shit" we are doing the work of those we oppose. Engagement requires hope and a vision of what we are committed to accomplishing -- and FAITH that we can accomplish those goals. That is what powers the action needed to get things done.
We can be clear-eyed about the enormous challenges ahead without falling into the trap of sowing the sort of hopelessness and cynicism that immobilizes. When we do the latter, we are doing the work of those we oppose. They want us demoralized. They want us immobilized. They want us afraid. They want us tearing down allies who aren't "doing it right." I think it is up to each of us to take responsibility for the messages we spread. Consider before posting or saying something: Is this demoralizing or activating? Am I doing the work of those who want the "zone" flooded with negativity? Or am I countering that with hope, faith, and concrete, doable steps.
And on the "circular firing squad" front (you didn't raise this, but I see that as part of a tendency toward destructive negativity). Healthy debate and disagreement are essential. As is criticism. But whatever we do, we need to recognize the successes we are having and focus on building from there. We need to find areas of common ground with allies who may be doing things we disagree with.
And finally, structural reform is certainly a higher bar than policy reform. But we can begin building the political will for both in conversations with each other and through lobbying our electeds to get out there and advocate for some of those big changes. The answer to "why are you talking about xxx, it will never pass" is "xxx may not pass today, but I'm talking about it, and call on you to talk about it, because that's how we build the political will to get it done. We must push the boundaries of the possible. That is how you make what seems out of reach today a reality tomorrow.
The only thing that is certain is that if we stay silent -- if we and our electeds aren't out there making the case for xxx, than xxx, whatever that may be, will never get done.
