They were about an end to an era of peace and justice at the hands of the “`wild bunch”, which was the movie title (Sam Pekinpah, 1972). Dylan had a bit part, playing a character called “Alias”. The song was the background dirge for the dying local sheriff (Ernest Borgnine) who was gut shot by one of the “bunch.” Give it a listen, it’s right up to date.
