U.S. Troops Were Told Iran War Is for "Armageddon," Return of Jesus

A combat-unit commander told non-commissioned officers at a briefing Monday that the Iran war is part of God’s plan and that Pres. Donald Trump was “anointed by Jesus to light the signal fire in Iran to cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth,” according to a complaint by a non-commissioned officer.

From Saturday morning through Monday night, more than 110 similar complaints about commanders in every branch of the military had been logged by the Military Religious Freedom Foundation (MRFF).

The complaints came from more than 40 different units spread across at least 30 military installations, the MRFF told me Monday night.
***
The NCO wrote to the MRFF that their commander “urged us to tell our troops that this was ‘all part of God’s divine plan’ and he specifically referenced numerous citations out of the Book of Revelation referring to Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.”

Makes no sense, as you point out, since fundies like her believe that the actions of the anti Christ will bring on the return of Jesus.

I made the mistake of trying to speak rationally to her about it. I pointed out all the predictions about end times that have never come true, but she thinks they all got it wrong and she has it right.

I tried telling her that even the church I grew up in (Lutheran) taught us not to try to interpret the book of Revelation as a prediction for modern times because it was written for people who lived 2000 years ago and referred to the Roman Empire.

She accused me of blasphemy for disregarding a sacred book.

I gave up. She's a hopeless case.

It's a misunderstanding of scripture, mostly by Protestant denominations, claiming these passages refer to the single, public event of the Second Coming of Jesus to rule on Earth.

The only thing Bible readers need know is what Jesus (who calls himself the Son of Man) says about end times in Matthew 24:3–36

" ... 3 As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

4 And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. 5 For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. 6 And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not be alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. 7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are but the beginning of the birth pains.
9 “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. 10 And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. 11 And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. 12 And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. 13 But the one who endures to the end will be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. ... 23 Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or ‘There he is!’ do not believe it.
24 For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform great signs and wonders, so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.
25 See, I have told you beforehand. 26 So, if they say to you, ‘Look, he is in the wilderness,’ do not go out. If they say, ‘Look, he is in the inner rooms,’ do not believe it. 27 For as the lightning comes from the east and shines as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 28 Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather.

The Coming of the Son of Man
29 “Immediately after othe tribulation of those days pthe sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

The Lesson of the Fig Tree
32 “From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. 33 So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates.
34 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place.
35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but fmy words will not pass away.

No One Knows That Day and Hour
36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only...."

The Christian Nationalists in the military were always pushing their religion wherever they could. When I was at the AF NCO Leadership Academy, one of the 20 students was very religious and wanted to start the day by having a class prayer. Our instructor put it to a vote of the class and said if one person voted no then we wouldn't do it. We, including me, overwhelmingly reject the suggestion. Small victory but it felt good.

One thing I've always objected to while in the AF was during ceremonies either a Chaplin or someone would lead those attending in a prayer. They'd say "Please Bow your heads" and 80% of the time would end it with "In Jesus' name, Amen." One could interrupt "Bow your heads" as an order and not doing so could, theoretically, get you in trouble. Also, there are people who are Jewish, Muslims, Buddhists, Wiccans, atheists, etc., who don't identify with Jesus and the person leading the prayer is forcing their religious belief on others. As an atheist, I never bowed my head but I sat quietly while the prayer was said.

IMO, any commander, officer, NCO, civilian, etc.who tries to invoke their religious belief on military members should never be in a position to lead or influence others.

So the message is that this is God's divine will, Armageddon, the imminent return of JC?

My understanding of US style military religion must be way off.

Seriously, do some people really wish for the End of Days, the rapture, the 'JC comes down to Earth' thing?

Evil in the name of religion is still evil, even more so.

I loved my Aunt a great deal, but the most interesting effect on my life was to lead me to atheism. When my father and she got into big religious arguments I realized they were working with different translations of the Bible, and thus the Bible had no meaning. One could make it say whatever one wished.

The world will end someday, oh course, but it's nit going to involve Jesus and the confusion between an orange pedophile and Jesus.

96. My parents were evangelical. They did not believe in the Rapture or Armageddon.
Tue Mar 3, 2026, 02:05 PM

Their church taught that Revelations is an allegory, not what is to come. In fact my parent's church taught

that what was in Revelations had already happened in Roman times. They did not elaborate much on

that theory, but that's what they said. All they taught about the end of the world was that we would meet

Jesus in the sky and go to Heaven. No big war or anything other than that.

So not all evangelical groups believe in Armageddon or the Rapture.

My husband, son, and I lived in Israel for a year and went to Tel Meggido, a ancient fortification in the northern

part of the Jezreel Valley. That was the first time anyone told me that Armageddon, (Tel Meggido,) was an actual place!

The tour guide told us that this was where the world was supposed to come to an end in a huge battle.

Being an Israeli Jew, he didn't seem too worried about Armageddon! He was much more interested in talking about

the archaeological history than the Bible. Being a fortification, Tel Meggido had an impressive water system so

that the people there could withstand a siege. It was a beautiful site, and I really enjoyed my tour.

Here's a link to Trip Advisor with photos:

I am more concerned about our troops not having their personal religious beliefs trampled on than some weird MAGA

Armaggedon conspiracy theory. Thanks for the article. Going to look up the MRFF and their findings.

It is a complete misinterpretation of a book that has been debated over whether to be included in the Bible for literally centuries.

When these Christian Nationalists are pushing their beliefs in every aspect of your military work and personnel life the thing they hate is when you push back by either questioning the behavior or calling them out for what they're doing. They know most people are civil when religion comes into the workplace and won't say anything negatively against the Christian Nationalists. The rely on others silence to make it appear the people they're pushing their beliefs on accept it. The key is not to be afraid to stand up and challenge them. The thing I learned early in my career is knowing how far to take it. For me, that was questioning and challenging what they said and making them defend it. I've done that and at first, they'll try to defend themselves and when they fail they start calling themselves "victims" of anti-Christian bias.

I'd rather explain myself to my commander than to let them go unchallenged. Commanders aren't stupid and they can see through the Christian Nationalists fairly easy. Most people are fearful of retaliation if they challenge or don't agree with the Christian Nationalist commander but that fear is a two-way street. That commander has to be aware their commander(s) above them may not approve of what the commander is doing and they could be relieved of their command.

127. It's all about the Apocalypse: Another disturbing reason behind the right wing's pro-Israel obsession
Tue Mar 3, 2026, 05:33 PM
Tuesday

As a Jew, it is common knowledge the support from the American religious right is due in some part due to a belief that the existence of Israel is essential for their belief in a second coming.

https://www.rawstory.com/2019/02/apocalypse-another-disturbing-reason-behind-right-wings-pro-israel-obsession
Politics professor Elizabeth Oldmixon explained in an interview with Vox the strange thread of Christianity that fosters an apocalyptic vision the inspires much of the right-wing support for Israel.

These are the folks who believe that there will be a millennium in the future, a golden age, where Christ reigns on Earth, [and] they believe that before Christ will return, there will be a tribulation where Christ defeats evil, she said. There will be natural disasters and wars, and perhaps an Antichrist, as the book of Revelations notes. Then at the end of that period, the people of the Mosaic covenant, including the Jews, will convert. Then after their conversion, the great millennium starts.

She continued: You have this group of people looking around for signs of the end time, and in the 20th century when Israel was founded, this was seen as a major sign. This was electrifying for that community because the gathering of all the Jews in exile to the Holy Land is a prerequisite for all of these events unfolding. So for the subset of evangelicals in the 20th century, support for Israel became a really, really important political position.

And as evangelical Christianity grew into a central part of the GOPs coalition, pro-Israel policies became cemented in the partys ideology.

The alliance between the evangelicals and pro-Israeli Jews, though, is a peculiar partnership. The Christians enter into the bargain with the assumption that, when they reach their goal of the apocalypse, any Jews will either become Christians or go to hell. But their pro-Israel allies dont seem to mind this much, perhaps because they dont believe this version of the apocalypse will ever actually come to be and as long as it is just a fantasy, their interests and those of evangelicals remain aligned.

For example, the US embassy in Israel by trump to appease these nut cases. This story may be crazy but the nut cases who want an apocalypse worry me

Jesus will come back on His own terms, at a time of His choosing. Hey, Christian extremists: you know not the day nor the hour, even if you think you just have to stage all the props and set dressing for it. You are not Jesus' stage manager. You may as well be trying to mix magic ingredients in a bubbling cauldron in the right order and chanting spells to produce the results you desire -- a decidedly non-Christian way to do anything.
