Weeks before Graham Platner promoted an antisemitic conspiracy theorist in a now-deleted social media post on Thursday, the controversial Maine Senate candidate appeared on a popular YouTube show whose host has spread specious claims about Jews and Israel.
Platner faced blowback this week for boosting a social media comment about a looming war with Iran by Stew Peters, a neo-Nazi influencer who has frequently espoused antisemitic tropes and engaged in Holocaust denial. Platners team said the post was made in error and immediately removed it after learning it elevated a despicable account.
In late January, however, Platner sat for a lengthy online interview with Nate Cornacchia, a retired Green Beret who has also promoted antisemitic conspiracy theories. Near the end of their hour-long conversation, Platner, a fellow military veteran, called himself a longtime fan of Cornacchias YouTube channel, Valhalla VFT, and said it was an absolute pleasure being on the show.
Cornacchia, whose show claims nearly 500,000 YouTube subscribers, has in recent months helped stoke a burgeoning far-right conspiracy theory alleging that Israel was involved in the assassination of the conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

(2,690 posts)It isn't comforting that the more this guy is confirmed to be nazi-curious (if not a straight up nazi), he seems to gain more ground.

(54,089 posts)If a person is, at the end of the day, a Never-Platner Dem primary voter, they surely must be very frustrated that the only other option has come down to the far from inspiring moderate Mills.
Mills will be 85yo at the end of her first term, and she would be the oldest-ever 'first time elected' US Senator in US history should she win, and that, much to the dislike of some here on DU, is absolutely having an impact.
She also has multiple problematic stances that definitely hurt her in a Democratic primary and likely in the general as well, should she advance to it.
For instance she is pro filibuster, she is anti-decriminalisation for small personal use amounts of drugs, she actively opposes red-flag laws for guns (despite her opposition, voters approved a red-flag law in November 2025), she has vetoed collective bargaining rights (so she is anti-union to a degree, and the unions are so far endorsing Platner), vetoed wealth taxes, vetoed protections for renters, and vetoed some tribal sovereignty laws, etc. She also polls worse (atm) against Collins than Platner.
Platner himself has some real problems (as relentlessly pointed out on DU by some) that Collins and the RW dark money will no doubt drop tens of millions of dollars to hammer him with in the general should he win the Dem primary.
It is a shame, IMHO, that the Maine Dems could not recruit a better candidate than these two. They had one (again IMHO), in Jordan Wood, but he dropped out to run for the US House in ME-2 when Jared Golden announced he was not running for re-election.

How does he keep making these "blunders" after going to the trouble of deleting all those posts in October? He's either incredibly stupid and he really believes that garbage.

(22,428 posts)He has received several prominent endorsements despite his "mistakes" and per the article in post 23:
Platner is definitely the insurgent candidate. His supporters are not only willing to support that kind of unconventional candidate, but willing to embrace that kind of unconventional candidate, he said.
