(62,325 posts)do not include those who refuse to wear rose colored glasses despite the pressure to do so. As has happened time and time again, the facts don't seem to matter to the extremes on both sides so long as they can pretend that their 'team' is winning. And while both sides play this game, the manipulators in power take away a little more each time the game is played by them, counting on those who want so much to believe, to try to silence those who see clearly what is going on. But it's getting harder and harder for them as more and more people refuse to remain blind to the facts.
The people just lost again, but the good news is, this time they were prepared, they expected it because it has all become so predictable. 'Complaining' as YOU call it, is what has happened throughout history and as time passes, it is the 'complainers' who in the end, have changed things for the better.

If you could reverse ONE election outcome, which would it be?
Of all the presidential elections since Watergate, if you could go back and reverse the outcome of just ONE of them (knowing that would have changed history and subsequent elections most likely would have featured different candidates debating very different issues, which election would you change and why?
1976: Carter d. Ford
1980: Reagan d. Carter
1984: Reagan d. Mondale
1988: Bush d. Dukakis
1992: Clinton d. Bush
1996: Clinton d. Dole
2000: Bush d(?). Gore
2004: Bush d. Kerry
2008: Obama d. McCain
And Manny's reply?

16. 2008.
In the prior elections, people got what they wanted, whether it was good or bad, perhaps with the exception of the stolen 2004 election (which was close, anyway). So, no matter who won, things would have generally gone the way they did. For example, Al Gore was an active participant in Clinton's development of the outsourced-torture "extraordinary rendition" program.
In 2008, people voted overwhelmingly for hope and change, but we got much other, for examples:
http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/tue-june-15-2010/resp...
This is an enormous problem. We've had almost 20% real unemployment for years, and more shoveling of worker's cash to the wealthiest. So now the Democratic brand is badly damaged, and the people have returned even-crazier Republicans to office in a desperate attempt for actual, helpful change. It's like the poor souls who leaped from the Twin Towers on 9/11 to avoid the fire. Awful, awful choices.
Would McCain's policies be much different? I don't see how. In addition, at least we'd have a chance for bringing in people with Democratic ideals in 2010 and 2012 - 2010 was a disaster, and 2012 is unlikely to see a good outcome at the Presidential level.
That's right. Manny didn't choose to have Carter beat Reagan in 1980, or Gore beat Bush Jr in 2000. He thought the election he'd most like to see reversed was Obama beating McCain in 2008.
And that's why I think every fucking thing that Manny posts should be taken with a boulder of salt.

(34,857 posts)We would need this depression to get much worse to cleanse both parties
I hate this. But that's what I think it would take.
You 'hate it' but we 'need it'.
Yeah. We need all the heartache of a great depression - the 25% unemployment ... the massive economic collapse. We need it!
MannyGoldstein
(34,589 posts)can't seem to find the part saying that we *should* have a depression worse than what we have now.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)Don't be disingenuous. Own your words. You spend your whole posting career here slamming 'third way Democrats' and then say the only way we can weed 'em from the party is by having a great depression. You've said a few times on this forum that you think an economic collapse is needed to purge out those Democrats you don't like.
MannyGoldstein
(34,589 posts)Thanks for playing. No consolation prize.

(34,857 posts)You've been openly rooting against our economy since Obama took office. The irony with this thread is that it's supposed to be an FU toward your haters when you're one of the biggest haters on this board.
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)Not to mention you edited Manny's post which changed the meaning somewhat.
Manny also makes the point in a later post in the same subthread that the Depression brought FDR and the New Deal as well as a 300% increase in union membership during FDR's presidency.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)Manny has spent his entire posting career here railing against what he considers 'third way Democrats' and openly says we need another depression to weed 'em out. It's not hard to put things together.
There are some DUers, and they're almost all the same who cheer for us to go over the fiscal cliff and straight into a recession, that would throw economy off the edge because they believe it'll benefit their ideology. They don't care how many people are hurt by it - how many lives are destroyed ... just to advance their ideology. It's sad and no, I'm not going to support members who advance radical talk like that.
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)It looks like the cliff dive just might happen anyway if the House doesn't pass the Senate bill.
You seem to be making the assumption that everyone on DU who thinks like Manny is upper middle class or better, that's not remotely true in my own case.
Drunken Irishman
(34,857 posts)Manny's own words are there. I didn't take it out of context. Manny feels, and he can deny it (and he's been called out in it before, so, this isn't new ... he even got caught editing one of his posts because it talked about the need for another recession), that we might be best served going into a depression because it could bring about radical change. I'm not taking his quote out of context - this is what he typed. To weed out the third way Democrats, we need the depression (we're not actually in a depression) to get worse.
Manny wants to weed 'em out. So, it's not hard to see that he also wants the economy to worsen so that we can weed 'em out.
Fumesucker
(45,851 posts)And then you cut an entire paragraph right out of the middle of the text you quoted.
The latter at least is definitely deceptive editing and IMO the former is too.
