any American lives in poverty.

That a person of your intelligence - as evidenced by your writing skill - is having difficulty, that's simply jaw dropping.

We must all pull together as real Democrats, FDR Democrats, to defeat the forces of ignorance and avarice and restore our country to a place where all can prosper.

Thanks for an excellent post! Have a fun and successful new year!

Thank you for saying it so well: being a liberal Democrat is something to be proud of. I will bear that noble status until the day I die...

"I didn't know a whole lot about the political process, i didn't know a whole lot about the different parties and for what each party represents, nor did I know who the politicians who made up the different parties were or what they stood for, in fact the only thing that I knew for sure when I first joined DU was that Bush stole the 2000 Election"

Corey - I'm 58 and I'm in the same boat you described above.

When I meet young people these days I apologize to your generation because my generation totally fucked up your future. I see our American Democracy rapidly eroding into a full blown oligarchy, with a touch of totalitarian police state thrown in.

All because of a very small number of overly wealthy greedheads that want to extract every last cent and any possibility of a decent life for those that have to work for a living.

As a boomer, I was there as a child to witness first hand the post WW2 prosperity and opportunity. I lived through it, although I was young and not historically aware that the middle class prosperity I enjoyed as a child was such a recent development in American History.

Someone your age naturally thinks it was always like this. IT WASN'T! There used to be a lot more shared prosperity. I apologize for the wealthy and powerful of my generation that have stolen your generations chances for a bright and prosperous future.

My generation and everybody alive today have to work harder to right this injustice and build a social structure that insures prosperity and longevity for all!

-90% Jimmy

not nothing comes free. In a way your lucky because you know what it is to do without. Your right many people in the middle class are falling from what they are used to. But we all pray everyday we can keep our heads above the water. I hope you will make your dreams come true. No one but you can make them come true. Of course along the way you will meet good people that will want to help you. Your were very smart at 14 to get involved in politics and realize what really is going on. I'm sure you'll make your goal. Keep the fire in the belly going and you will meet your goal. Happy New Year.

Hang in there. And thanks for this post.

A lot of us have been poor at one time or another, have had disasters befall us, and survived. I predict that you and yours will survive and prosper, that there will be a time when this period seems like a bad dream. Have faith in yourself and in your fellow humans.

This cold-hearted aberration that is today's America is the last gasp of the greed merchants; it will not stand; humane forces are even now gathering together, unifying in the sea of information that we now have available to us, taking shape as did the first life forms in the primordial soup.

My generation, the 60's generation (both by decade and by age) made some strides, but didn't quite make it to a self-reproducing stage. We were not exactly a failed experiment, but an aborted one. It's up to your generation to put us over the top, to slay the patriarchal monster and free the species to start actualizing its magnificent potential.

I want to know what you are doing now and your parents are doing. you can start your own blog. I have lurked On DU since 2001. I joined years later.
What I find most interesting on DU is the personal stories that DUrs write of their lives and personal encounters with other people. You have written down your feelings. That is a very hard thing to do for most people. Keep writing.il
