Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy tried to deflect responsibility on Monday after two pilots were killed and dozens more people were injured in a collision at LaGuardia Airport calling on Congress to increase their funding for air traffic control workers at airports.
Duffy was speaking at a news conference with several New York state and New York City leaders discussing the new details revealed around the moments that led to the fatal collision, which was still under a National Transportation Safety Board investigation. He dodged multiple questions about what happened and attempted to shift the blame.
"Congress needs to do their job," said Duffy, who cited multiple requests to lawmakers to fund air traffic controllers.

Hey, Duffy you should know how many controllers were in that tower and to deflect that answers says everything......do you realize idiot what those two pilots were doing landing at night......while one pilot had their head down and if possible the other one was looking out the cockpit window (maybe) and also looking at the instruments landing at night you know the ILS system............... you do know what the ILS is don't you on the PFD in the cockpit you do know that one pilot is telling the other pilot the decision heights when landing don't you ................there is reporting that there was only one controller in that tower........if so ......resign............your a menace to air safety................

(5,795 posts)I watched the press conference. Duffy said the money he asked for from Congress was specifically for technology upgrades.
He did speak of increasing the number of ATC's. He said they have many at the academy, but training and certification take time.
I think the reporter conflated the two issues within the conference.
I posted it about it earlier.

I will find a clip to confirm that I heard it right.

(5,795 posts)Sean Duffy was not talking about funding that he asked for from Congress for more air traffic controllers. The money he asked for from Congress was for technological system upgrades.
He said: we need to modernize the system.
He said: I'm not saying this crash would have been prevented, if all that equipment had been deployed.
During the question session, he said: there is a whole suite of technological upgrades, that will make the job of the air traffic controllers easier. He said: it is a separate issue, but it underscores the point that Congress needs to do their job.
Conflating the issue of funding in this context is irresponsible communication. When people who are supposed to be professional speak this way and conflate issues - it confuses people...including reporters.
Here is a link to the youtube vid of the press conference. Sean Duffy brings up the funding request the second time he takes the podium, which starts at 13:20. He continues the reference into the Q & A.
