The tide is changing--I live in a county that went 60% for Trump and they are angry!

I live in a VERY red Trumpian county. Nextdoor was a barometer of just how fanatic the support has remained. When the ICE brutality was at its peak in Minnesota, these people were rabid in their glee. “Yeah!! Way to go Trump!!!” was 95% of the commentary.

What a difference a war in Iran and high gas prices make. Wow! I have never seen so many negative comments about what Trump is doing, and voices that still try to defend are few (maybe 10%) and half-hearted versus full throated. HUGE shift which I honestly didn’t think possible. I am genuinely surprised.

Lots of Trumpers in their huge trucks in my neck of the woods, the gas prices must be hitting them hard. Sucks that it’s only when something affects Trumpers personally that they care, but the right has always been that way so no surprise.

I’m not naive enough to think MAGA would vote Dem, but I do believe they see that MAGA as a movement is crumbling apart.

So many of the MAGA were people who didn’t really participate in politics until Trump came along and they responded to his message of “hey, you’re not a loser because of anything you did—it’s those brown people, and “the libs””. These people suddenly felt they were part of something, they were “superior”, they were cool. So they went out to vote, something that block didn’t always do. Easier to bitch from your living room than get up and vote.

But the party’s over, it’s not fun anymore, so they’ll go back to old “why bother to vote”.

It’s not fun anymore. MAGA doesn’t have the same large scale enthusiasm, it’s crumbling. They loved the rallies, the “owning the libs”, the ability to be racist and have that be admired (by their peers). That’s all fading away. Now they are dealing with the hangover.

and then follow it with "but Obama/Clinton/Biden/Harris was much worse" and vote for anyone and everyone with an R next to their name in the next election.

They never admit their values or policy positions were wrong. They lay the error at the feet of the politician they voted for, not themselves for choosing thusly. It is always an external one-off failure, never an internal systematic one.

Those who weren’t interested in politics before Trump came along will go back to not being interested. No one is going to take the place of Trump for them, so I expect many will slither back to their holes.

One of my pet peeves is having to repeat myself. Another is not understanding that voting patterns aren't binary. There's party-line voting, split-ticket voting, and not voting. And then of course, just because something doesn't change the minds of a cult doesn't mean Democrats can't ever win anything again. Those wishy-washy independent/swing voters are in the balance. But clearly you already know this. I'm just venting.

But it's always good to hear about the cult not happy with the cult.

19. I have grown up with the type that joined MAGA

I grew up surrounded by a certain type that were attracted to MAGA. I’m not talking about ALL of MAGA, just a certain subset (though a large subset).

Largely underachieving uneducated white men who feel frustrated that the world seems to be moving on and changing while they are stuck. They see others achieving success, particularly those that are of color, or women, LGBTQ—all groups they could have claimed superiority to decades ago simply due to being white—and it makes them angry and resentful. They never take responsibility for their own lot in life, it’s always someone else’s fault, and, along those same lines, they don’t make the effort to vote but will b*tch endlessly about the “government”.

Then, lo and behold, Trump comes along and tells them their lot in life is not their fault!!! No, it’s the fault of those same people they resent—people of color, women, LGBTQ, immigrants, “elites” (educated)—basically anyone that doesn’t resemble them (largely white and uneducated). Not only that but there is a club they can join, MAGA, of like minded people. And, cherry on top, they can openly proclaim all their racist, hateful bigotry and be rewarded! Now they’ll vote, because they are voting to keep MAGA alive.

But MAGA has lost its power, lost its strength.. As Trump crumbles and stumbles so does MAGA. They want that back, which is why they are clinging to whatever is left and desperately trying to defend Trump, but it’s a losing battle. There is no one replacement for Trump to them. J D Vance isn’t it.

so to speak.
Of course, concerns of security and self-worth are universal, but when they are based on things like race and religion, gender etc. other people stand to get hurt. Most of the people you're talking about are probably not sophisticated when it comes to policy and the republican party has latched onto that which is why they created the specter of the "culture wars." Anyone "different" who is fighting for their constitutional rights is a "threat to culture." And now here we are. They'll vote to jack up their health insurance and put their farms in dire straits just to stick it to the "woke" crowd.

And while not all republicans were so extreme, they all sat back and played along when it suited them. They also did it with the help of white independents who were unequipped to recognize just how anti-everything the republican party had become. They just saw a bunch of white male faces and like everything elses, assumed "they're stronger on the economy, foreign policy, and crime." Wrong!

I just wonder what the new name of the movement will be after Cankles Rashneck is dead and gone.

Their touchstone is their hatred of the evil liberal boogyman.

They might flake off a bit by not voting this go round, but will come back in if we happen to have a full election in 2028 and there is a D nominee and our candidate gets the Gore, Kerry, Dean, Hillary, Biden treatment.

I’m just hoping the cycle doesn’t repeat until after the midterms and after the 2028 election.

My hopes are that the Dems win in the midterms and make some concrete changes that will help protect elections going forward. My dream is the Dems win a super majority and overturn Citizen’s United.

One huge mistake the Dems could make would be not to prosecute those in the Trump administration who have broken the law. And my fear is they won’t. If the Dems do the whole “let’s look forward, not back” crap and not prosecute those who have so clearly broken the law, then why wouldn’t any future administration break the same laws (and more).

Trust me that not only are they incapable of doing so, it is likely their education didn't provide much in the way of accurate civics.

Example: gs in hs in TN debated govt teacher who insisted NATO is North American Treaty Org. Extrapolate the implications. His entire hs ed here was that way. Barf

Their latest pickup ad campaign has a lot of loud guitar and trucks wasting gas doing donuts in the mud with a lot of imagery appealing to the crowd that feels entitled to bad judgment. It's the most blatant targeting I've seen in a pickup ad yet and it's pretty sad.

They’re pissed at Trump and by not voting they know a democrat will be coming in to clean up their mess. Then whenever something happens that they don’t like (gay people being allowed to hold hands on public streets), they will blame the party in power, and gloat that they didn’t vote for them.
