Russian forces launched a drone attack in broad daylight Tuesday on the center of Lviv, a historic city in western Ukraine that had been spared much of the fighting that has devastated other parts of the country.
More than a dozen people were reported injured and the number of victims of the surprise attack was expected to rise, officials warned.
"There are already 13 injured people in hospitals in Lviv," Mayor Andriy Sadovyi posted online. "The number of victims is increasing."
The regional governor warned residents to take shelter.
The church that was hit was just two blocks from the hotel where I stayed when I visited Lviv over 6 years ago. The center of Lviv has countless historic buildings in it.
I actually toured that particular church. It dates back to the 17th Century and features a fresco ceiling reminiscent of the Sistine Chapel. Beautiful place. It has obviously no military value whatsoever so it's all the more senseless that it was targeted.
