Merkley introduces bill banning sports, election gambling. Here's why

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) introduced a bill on Thursday aiming to crack down on prediction markets amid concerns that gambling on sports, elections and government activities invite corruption.

Sen. Merkley introduced the STOP Corrupt Bets Act alongside Congressman Jamie Raskin (D-MD).

The bill would ban prediction market betting on elections, government actions, sports and military actions, which the lawmakers note, are not commodities and have “little-to-no value in helping business investments.”

“When anyone can use prediction markets to make a well-timed bet on Congress passing a bill, government decisions, or a military strike, it’s ripe for corruption and erodes public trust,” Sen. Merkley said.

Have gotten out of control.

The worst is political prediction markets. Throw money directly in to influence voters to vote your side.

This all started awhile ago, and it needs to be stopped somehow. The weed shops, the gambling, all of it.

I’m certainly not afraid to visit other shops near them or anything. What kind of crime? By the customers, the proprietors, both? I’m not sure what the criminal cross section is here unless you just put all acts historically deemed immoral in one box. I’m sure issues have arisen out of legalization of both “vices”, but I’m not sure their related in kind or impact.

is larger than we know. But the weed shops might as well be Yankee Candle shops for all the crime that goes on in and around them.

I barely drink & rarely indulge in pot.
That's two things you've made up, now.
Plus, directly insulting a DUer is a violation of TOS.

others have addictions when there is no evidence of any such thing.

Seems like either shit-stirring or rank ignorance. Or maybe projection.

Last year San Diego manager Mike Shildt quit due to “stress” and threats of violence directed at him from gamblers.

Pretty soon managers and coaches will need their own security detail. They could ask Mitt Romney for recommendations.

Another terrible SCOTUS decision!!!!!!!
