Is the Islamic Republic run by extreme bigots?

I think the answer is obviously yes. If one were to compile a list of the most bigoted regimes in the world, the Islamic Republic (currently in power in Iran) should be right there at the top. But I'm interested in what others think. Is there some reason a right-thinking progressive or liberal wouldn't consider the Islamic Republic to be among the most despicable of bigots?

It doesn't mean we should attack them just because they are bigots. That's a separate question.

The United States is vastly better. That obvious fact can be used to better calibrate ones bigotry detector. If the bigotry detector goes off red for the United States and is not ultra-red for the Islamic Republic, the detector is malfunctioning.

Idaho is passing a bill that allows for life imprisonment for trans people who simply use the bathroom. A first offense allows for 1 year of prison time, in which trans prisoners will be made felons (actually, on the second “offense” I believe), be forcefully detransitioned and be experimented on (tortured) with conversion therapy.

No, we are not throwing LGBT people off buildings yet. We just ruin their lives with the legal system for the crime of having to pee, and then throw them in jails for quack medical experimentation RFK Jr. and right wing Christians pulled out of their asses.

If you are in that situation, is Iran any worse than the US at that point? “They may be ruining my life and torturing me, but, at least I’m not being hanged!” Meh…

Differentiating between the three in regards to bigotry is pointless angels-on-the-head-of-a-pin talk.

The metaphor about angels on the heads of pins is far from applicable here. That metaphor is about pointless, unresolvable distinctions and trivial questions. In the case of the United States, Israel, and the Islamic Republic, the Islamic Republic is obviously far more bigoted, which is an important distinction, and the question is not trivial.

But, to prove me wrong, point me to a video of an Islamic Republic multi-racial or gay married couple in their leadership vouching for them. I wish you luck.

All three are beyond the pale. All three are moral abominations in their conduct. You say one is worse than the others. So what? What use is that? In what kind of project is that employed?

One has to have their lens of justice very, very coarsely focused to claim there's not a huge difference among these three. The United States and Israel are both excellent, historically and in terms of the world as it is now. We practically define what it means to be excellent. Certainly not perfect, but excellent. The Islamic Republic, on the other hand, who are holding the people of Iran hostage, are quite obviously terrible bigots. It's not a fine distinction at all. Not to see their bigotry is not to understand bigotry.

are holding the people of the United States hostage!

The United States is "excellent" "historically"??

Where've you been? Try asking Native Americans, POC, women, Japanese Americans, LGBTQ, etc., about the excellent historical American bigotry.

We're grading on a curve here.

It should be obvious that the United States is tip top or near it. Everyone wants to live here. And they are right to want it.

It's silly to compare us to some sort of imaginary Utopia. Just silly. We are on Earth. Start with that. And it actually creates a setback to justice when we don't recognize and encourage our own goodness and success. We don't need to be narcissists. But we are good.

but now you are talking about "we" in the USA, rather than the regime currently in charge. There is a huge difference in bigotry between the USA in general, and Trump and his minions (who obviously can't be said to "practically define what it means to be excellent" ). I see you still make a distinction between the "Islamic Republic" and the people of Iran, though.

They're like the Taliban - but with more resources. However, that doesn't mean it was a prudent
idea to attack them at this time. In fact it was a very bad idea. Were our interests being threatened
at the time? No. Are we carrying water for Israel with this misadventure? Yes. Is Israel an ally?
not sure - maybe a strategic partner... but it's a transactional relationship and
we're the one picking up the tab for a partner that's perpetually begging. Not only that, but for
years the ultra-orthodox got a pass on military service. No military service mandated (at least until
recently - but they're still fighting conscription) but hey, it's no problem when Palestinians are run off their land
by "settlers." The shine has come off.

There's a strong case to be made that they are also extremely homophobic and definitely religiously discriminatory. They are first class bigots, imo.

As far as carrying water for Israel, I don't think of it that way. I think of us as having mutual interests. One of the main shared interests in fact is the lack of bigotry and the respect for the rights of minorities of every kind. Israel stands out there.

Is going to war against Iran the right thing to do? I don't think we know for sure. I don't anyway. I just know with a high degree of certainty that the Islamic Republic, who currently hold the Iranian people hostage, target civilians, foment terrorism, and attack countries that didn't attack them are bad guys.

Their theocratic autocracy, misogyny, executions of homosexuals and massacre of their own civilians should be remembered.

An unjust attack does not retroactively forgive the regime.
