Former Gov. George Allen challenges Gov. Spanberger to redistricting debates

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Former Republican Governor George Allen has invited current Democratic Govern Abigail Spanberger to a series of debates over redistricting.

Allen, who served as governor from 1994 to 1998, hand-delivered a letter to Spanberger’s office challenging her to debate redrawn congressional maps ahead of the April 21 referendum.

“If you’re confident that your ideas and your candidates are so great, you ought not fear the people,” Allen said.

Allen has not held public office in decades. He said he is campaigning with No Gerrymandering Virginia, a bipartisan group advocating for voters to reject the redistricting referendum.
