Because he led them into battles that he knew were doomed, but necessary to win the war. When he returned, he was, for all intensive purposes, a Democrat. The '56 platform should be adopted by the Democrats today.

The party is done. It has nothing left to offer Americans or the world. It needs to go away, completely. We will be better off when theirs as many Republicans in our government as Whigs.
