Facebook is starting a community notes program. I think you might have to sign up for it. Basically, it allows someone to interject their opinion before you post. I came across it the other day on threads without realizing what it was. The post I was responding to remarked about something Trump claimed, which I knew wasn't true. So my response was, "Trump is a chronic liar." When I went to post, up comes a pop up that said something like, Before you post, be aware that many have posted similar remarks. To improve the quality of the discussion, would you reconsider your remarks?"
I ignored it and posted my original thoughts.
Point is, this is a valuable tool for the MAGAs who want to control the direction of a discussion. So be prepared.

I only wade into for family and community info and then get back out. The less we use it, the weaker it becomes.

(24,356 posts)It's all fake stuff now. Like 80% of the content is AI on my feed. You have to scroll through pages of nonsense to find one post from a friend or family member.
I am kind of an introvert, I don't stay in contact with too many friends, but I do like that FB lets me keep up on their lives, makes me still connected somehow and I need that. I feel like if I got rid of FB, I would lose contact with several dozen people I want to stay connected to. I'm not going to reach out and start collecting phone numbers, and I am not on much else for social media. But I am thinking of leaving regardless.

(52,605 posts)Why I am realistic about limiting my use, not boycotting/leaving. There is still a shred of value.

(24,356 posts)Zero AI content, extremely limited ads. If when you opened FB the scroll only moved from someone you know posting something, that would be something I would pay for. The concept of staying up on the lives of friend and family is valuable to me.
I got rid of IG. I got rid of Twitter when Elmo bought it. I got rid of threads. I barely use Bluesky. DU, Reddit, and a sports site are my primary social media spaces. I miss what FB used to be.

(1,936 posts)Ill occasionally go on there, but Ive noticed very few friends even bother posting updates anymore (I havent in almost a decade) and realize why I havent right after.
I tried it for marketplace and I saw a lot of scams there as well.
I have a whats app group with family in other countries. Even that bored me and I archived the conversation.

(10,310 posts)My old classmates (who had parents who were mainly Republican) went to college and changed to being more liberal so they all post anti-Trump things. Those who havent pretty much hide it. I went to a very liberal college and was a social worker - so other than my current neighbors almost everyone I have as a friend there are posting anti-Trump stuff or they like it. I post a lot of political stuff too. Ive only been de-friended by a few people. I am interested in animals/wildlife and the environment so I get a ton of stuff from that. I do get a lot of ads but thats because Im interested in fitness. Facebook has pretty much figured me out with their algorithms so I dont get how so many people are getting the crap.

At this rate FB will soon be as bad as Reddit.

(52,605 posts)Double check. You may have to go through other options before these windows show up.
I don't remember the options, but I do know I am satisfied about squashing the sites and never see them again..

(38,752 posts)I have one person I regularly snooze for 30 days to see if she has lost her obsession with amplifying trans hostile posts. Invariably the first post I see when she wakes up is another repost about "men" in women's sports.
She woke up about a week ago and is back on snooze.
They may have moved the controls, but the functionality is definitely still there.

(4,658 posts)20 days ago, Reddit r/Facebook:
...
I cant seem to snooze for 30 days anymore. Have friends whose political posts I dont want to see, but who are otherwise friends I want to keep. I dont want to unfollow them - I just periodically want to avoid their rants. That option has disappeared.
...
Almost two months unable to snooze anyone. Just another reason why Facebook sucks. I think its targeted because my wife has the snooze option.
https://www.reddit.com/r/facebook/comments/1s041na/why_are_options_to_snooze_for_30_days_or_hide_all/
So some still have the option but I am among those who don't.

(38,752 posts)A while ago I temporarily couldn't find it where I thought it was. I'm not sure exactly which cycle it was since I snooze this person every 30 days. More than one month - fewer than 6. So in the same time frame as the reddit post you included.

(392 posts)There are groups for cat lovers (me), organists and choirmasters (me), iguana lovers (me), Galapagos lovers (me), castles in Europe, organs in Europe. You name it. There are a lot of interest groups. It's up to you to find your niche. But to say that Fb is cancer, sewage, is ridiculous. You haven't taken the time to search out the groups that interest you.

(8 posts)just recently for something I didn't do... No recourse except the "appeal" which was the same as the ban. No explanation just "you're out". It was the only way I had of keeping in touch with some people so I have no way to get ahold of them... I agree it CAN be a swamp.

TxGuitar
(4,353 posts)What do you mean? How are right wing talking points involved here? You posted on a FB post, it asked you if you are sure you want to post the same thing everyone else is, you said yes, your post posted. Whats the issue?
Baitball Blogger
(52,605 posts)Some people would have been intimidated. I even hesitated for a second. The result of that comment would have stopped me from calling Trump a liar. So I see it as an attempt to influence the algorithms in his favor.

(4,353 posts)Are you saying the OP of your FB thread you're talking about asked you that question? Please spell it out for me, becuase it sounds like you posted something on a thread, the system asked you if you still wanted to post a redundant comment, you said yes and the comment posted. How are MAGAs doing this?

(Can't remember what the lawsuit was about exactly,
probably about some kind of 'privacy violation',
and I think I may have received more than many people because it was partly based
on the number of years you had been on Facebook,
which for me went back to around 2006 or so, I believe)
So when it comes to actions which will cause them to be sued
on issues which will make them pay me money,
"WELL DONE, FACEBOOK!"
However, while I still maintain memberships there,
I have scarcely participated or even READ it most of the time
since shortly after we elected President Biden...
After that election, I posted the political cartoon about
"Biden is boring". "Yeah, isn't it great?"

(5,191 posts)through a link offered in a news story about that particular lawsuit---
which I probably read from my main news-app 'Smart News'--- (my ONLY newsapp, frankly)
(I think I did that one or two years prior to actually receiving
the money on 'PayPal', so it came as a complete and happy surprise
when it finally arrived!)
There is an app called 'Catch' which purportedly will help you
to collect such settlements which you might be entitled to receive---
I haven't used it yet, myself, but possibly I should have.....

(8,675 posts)I've never had a face book, never twittered or tweeted, don't have a messenger or an ex, and dropped p-pal/e-bae ages ago.
On the other hand, I almost never use cash (except when necessary). don't even carry it, and don't have a checkbook.
Sympthsical
(11,063 posts)Community notes allow for a correction or counter-opinion to be posted in such a way that users see the criticism/correction alongside the original post.
So if someone posts an egregious lie, you might see a community note saying: "Users note this is a lie according to this article."
Twitter uses community notes, and it is awesome. I have seen some epic slapdowns of bullshit on Twitter because of them.
I'm not sure the feature you're describing is even community notes, though. In your case, FB is letting you know you're about to post something that would be extremely redundant at that point. And even then, you can still go ahead with that. I mean, I don't need to read the same comment fifty times, but people do what they do.
Frankly, I would love community notes on DU where corrections are allowed to be posted inside a false or misleading OP. So much stuff that isn't true gets posted here because people don't vet sources, and then you see forty people replying who never see when a member points out a correction and the OP hasn't edited.
Baitball Blogger
(52,605 posts)The experience I had was on Threads and I encountered it a week before Facebook announced their community notes. The gimmick, alone, is not the problem, but how it will be used.
And as you know with the concept of astro-turfing, or when one person casts more than one vote on an on-line poll, if someone wants to undermine the integrity of a process, it isn't hard to do.
So, let's wait and see how it's used.
Sympthsical
(11,063 posts)As I said, what I've seen of it on Twitter is pretty handy dandy.
I'm not really a regular FB user and don't comment publicly about politics there, so we'll have to see if the implementation is similar.
