Peter Magyar speaks to the election night crowd. This reminds me of the days of 1956 Hungary, Solidarity in Poland and the Berlin wall being dismantled with sledgehammers. My heart swells and I have been cutting onions again. I hope this brings Ukraine closer to victory and peace.
Russians, go home!

(4,354 posts)Ruszki is a colloquial pejorative or slur for Russian (Orosz). I believe the English equivalent is Russki or Russky.
Ruszkik Haza! was chanted during the 1956 Hungarian Revolution. It's truly amazing to hear it again.

(5,448 posts)They sure were using that phrase in 1956.

It's good to hear and see that younger generations of Hungarians were taught well in history class.

(4,354 posts)Unfortunately Hungary suffered under Soviet rule for another 33 years. But it was the first country to rise up against Soviet tyranny. The "Ruszkis" were brutal in 1956 - over 3,000 were killed, many crushed under Soviet tanks. The rebels waited in vain for help to arrive from "Amerika". The PM Imre Nagy was hanged, his name forbidden to be even spoken under threat of imprisonment or worse for over 30 years. I lived under that regime as a child. In memory of that and for the reasons others here share, this is a joyful day!
I think Péter Magyar tapped into that latent but historically powerful anti-Russian sentiment and it helped him win.
