(49,978 posts)Fourteen vice presidents have become president, eight because of the death of a president. These eight so-called 'accidental presidents' were John Tyler (VP for W, H. Harrison) Millard Fillmore (VP for Taylor) Andrew Johnson (VP for Lincoln), Chester A. Arthur (VP for Garfield) , Theodore Roosevelt(VP for McKinley) , Calvin Coolidge (VP for Harding) , Harry S. Truman (VP for F.D. Roosevelt) , and Lyndon B. Johnson (VP for Kennedy).
Vice-president Gerald Ford (VP for Nixon) took office because of President Nixon's resignation.
The other vice presidents who became president were John Adams (VP for Washington) , Thomas Jefferson, (VP for John Adams) Martin Van Buren (VP for Jackson) , Richard M. Nixon (VP for Eisenhower) and George H. W. Bush (VP for Reagan) . Of these six, all but Nixon were elected president immediately after serving as vice president. Nixon was defeated in 1960 but ran again and won in 1968

(46,700 posts)The following was as clear as mud.
Office as stepping stone to the Presidency
In recent decades, the Vice Presidency has frequently been used to launch bids for the Presidency. The transition of the office to its modern stature occurred primarily as a result of Franklin Roosevelt's 1940 nomination, when he captured the ability to nominate his running mate instead of leaving the nomination to the convention. Prior to that, party bosses often used the Vice Presidential nomination as a consolation prize for the party's minority faction. A further factor potentially contributing to the rise in prestige of the office was the adoption of Presidential preference primaries in the early 20th century. By adopting primary voting, the field of candidates for Vice President was expanded by both the increased quantity and quality of presidential candidates successful in some primaries, yet who ultimately failed to capture the Presidential nomination at the convention.
Of the thirteen Presidential elections from 1956 to 2004, nine featured the incumbent President; the other four (1960, 1968, 1988, 2000) all featured the incumbent Vice President. Former Vice Presidents also ran, in 1984 (Walter Mondale), and in 1968 (Richard Nixon, against the incumbent Vice President Hubert Humphrey). The first Presidential election to include neither the incumbent President nor the incumbent Vice President on a major party ticket since 1952 came in 2008 when President George W. Bush had already served two terms and Vice President Cheney chose not to run. Richard Nixon is also the only non-sitting Vice President to be elected President, as well as the only person to be elected President and Vice President twice each.

(3,145 posts)Joe Biden helped the already bloated anti-consumer credit industry make it a LOT harder even for people who were in dire financial straits through no fault of their own, such as from massive medical bills, to file for bankruptcy relief. I've never been able to get too sentimental over ol' non-ordinary Joe since. When push comes to shove he'll pose for pictures with the little guy but he'll stand with the oligarchs.

(3,695 posts)Whenever something positive is posted about any Democrat it only takes a minute for someone to show up and piss on the parade and accuse them of being the worst human on earth. Biden has done a great job as VP and I have always admired him and will continue to do.

(47,399 posts)I have seen almost identical posts on Biden threads pretty much every time. Its getting really old and redundant. Just because someone doesn't agree with something that Joe did in the Senate, doesn't mean they can't give him credit for his accomplishments. It certainly is petty to bring it up every time his name appears at DU in an unrelated thread. If this thread had been about bankruptcy, that might have been an appropriate time for such a comment.
I have always admired him as well!

He was on Larry King and warned that the US was not prepared for terrorism and would like to see more done to protect the country.
He scared me with his examples of how terrorists could cause great damage by many types of entry.
The next day the two planes hit the towers, 9-11-01, and all I thought about was Joe Biden telling me this would happen the very night before. I never forgot it and and never will, and I remember wishing that Joe was prez - but of course we know who wuz...
You're nobody's fool, Joe...

(47,399 posts)He never gets ALL the credit he deserves. Sadly, he's gotten a lot of blame that he didn't deserve.
Hmmm, yeah I recall you being a Biden supporter in the old days!!!

I've been watching and listening to Joe for many many years, when he was on the Judiciary Committee specifically. And hey, how did he know my favorite deli sandwich? I love meatball with provolone, and some banana peppers thrown on there too! Joe makes me smile.

(10,044 posts)They held a primary in January and the DNC said they couldn't hold it earlier than August -their regular primary election time - and that the delegates would not be counted at the convention.
So all the sensible candidates pulled their names off of our useless ballot and didn't even come here to campaign. This was my big chance to vote for Joe Biden for President, and Michigan screwed it up. He wasn't on the ballot.
I was so so mad. At the time, I never considered Obama although I really liked him, because a black man could never be elected president of the US. Everyone knows that.
Clinton left her name on the ballot and her people were demanding (unethically) that she get ALL of Michigan's delegates. The DNC wisely estimated and divided them amongst about 5 candidates.
