If deportation is the objective, what are the "detention centers" for, with people being held indefinitely?

They're free to leave the detention centers whenever they want, they just have to go back to their country of origin. The problem is that these detention centers are being used to compel immigrants to drop their legal claims and leave the US.

There is little, if any incentive, to release them. Apparently some of them have even been moved between different centers to delay their release and thus collect more fees.
