'A lifeline': House approves protected status for Haitians, with Pressley leading the charge

WASHINGTON — The House passed bipartisan legislation on Thursday to extend the protected immigration status of Haitian nationals for three additional years.

The vote follows more than a year of advocacy by Boston Representative Ayanna Pressley, a Democrat, and other lawmakers who have pushed back against the Trump administration’s effort to end what is known as Temporary Protected Status for about 350,000 Haitian migrants living in the United States.

The special immigration status is meant to temporarily prevent migrants from being deported back to countries in the midst of humanitarian crisis. Haitians have consistently been granted TPS on a bipartisan basis since 2010, when the country was devastated by a massive earthquake which led to widespread gang violence and government instability that continues today.
