A viral GoFundMe campaign raised more than $250,000 for 72-year-old Domino's delivery driver Barbara Gillespie after she fell while delivering a pizza in South Carolina. The fundraiser, titled "Bless You Barbara," was organized by Lacey Keighron and her family, whose doorbell camera captured the incident on February 2, 2023.

I'm glad it's there & that she got the help she needs, but what if your story isn't as heartfelt, or doesn't get the hits. I worry that too many people who don't need the safety net, feel that GoFundMe is an acceptable sub. I'm sure the m/billionaires think that.

I’m retired and have to adhere to a budget. On the other hand, I live on a beautiful sloop and can travel to coastal areas for next to nothing. My friends call it living the dream….they’ve never tried to live on a boat.

Anyone who thinks the pic on the left is an accurate depiction of what living is like on the EU equivalent off Social Security has been reading too many Republican comic books.

My wife, if she had to live off her German pension alone, wouldn’t have enough left from her €1400 per month pension to afford the olive, let alone a whole martini.

My contemporaries have worked until the age of 75, saving every dime they could get. Mot have retired now but you can bet they're not traveling. Their homes are small and convenient, they tend to drive things like electric bicycle instead of cars, and there is not a palm tree nor swimming pool in sight. All of them are hoping they don't outlive their savings.

Door Dash is a bit strenuous for most of them, we all wrecked our bodies instead of sitting in padded furniture at desks. Graveyard shift at a gas kiosk is more doable.

All of this is the result of the systematic looting of the Americans who work hard to keep this country running in order to create and maintain an aristocratic class that is rich enough to remain so through their heris in perpetuity. If this post makes you fearul and angry, good. The predators are not finished.

Taking away money from retired people, the health and education systems, etc.

And you have no choice whether to contribute to the war funds and Trump & Co lining their pockets or not.

Which is why we are still here.

More and more I am seeing the elderly work jobs like this. Delivering food, or working the counter at McDonald's.

I fear it's going to get worse as too many Gen Xers have been able to save almost nothing for retirement.

It's much harder to be an older woman--past 65 or 70--in the US.

We now shut up and don't mention it to people. There are quite a few of us, but we will be a silent group since saying anything is normally not a good idea.

Why? Because many people my age who I talk to never really planned on being 70 and Social Security is all they have. Many never went to any college, technical nor training school. They haven't even paid off a house for any equity value. So all they have is Social Security. My cousin is that way and he lives in a mobile home with two other guys who are in the same boat and all they do is drink all day

Some of them thought high school wasn't important as construction will surely make them wealthy. And construction did give them a decent living for a while, but age and health intervene. Truck Driving can work since they can last longer but some who did never invested anything else. I do know a former truck driver who did invest, and his retirement is working just fine. if someone wants to work the labor jobs for a living, they still need to plan for their future.

It is sad and could be largely prevented if our government made social security a more worthwhile investment and if jobs paid what they're really worth instead of all the money going to the owner class. But in the meantime, it takes a bit of sacrifice to save, invest and buy a home long before retirement time. If you paid rent all of your life, that could have went into a mortgage.

Everyone’s situation is different, even within families. Using three acquaintances as the proof to judge all struggling Americans is misguided.

They tend to be more frugal and less prone to chase fads. In today’s America, that makes you a “bad citizen” and therefore more disposable.
