I thought from watching some previews that it might be a Trump-bashing segment but this is what they were talking about:
U.N. inspectors believe Iran has close to 1,000 pounds of uranium enriched to 60%, nearly ready to be used in a nuclear weapon.
Cecilia Vega: 970 pounds of 60% highly enriched uranium. What can you do with that?
Matthew Bunn: So that is enough material for if you enrich it just a little bit more, for ten to eleven nuclear bombs.
https://www.cbsnews.com/news/what-it-could-take-for-us-to-remove-highly-enriched-uranium-from-iran-60-minutes-transcript/
Then the guy being interviewed was saying it would be worth it to invade Iran and take over the nuclear sites and he would sign up for it, but it would be very dangerous but worth American lives.
Wtf????
Is this a bunch of bs???

(2,738 posts)Why allow a country that cannot currently make nuclear bombs keep enough partially enriched uranium for 10 bombs out of the hands of a country that can make those bombs right away?
That begs the question.

(2,738 posts)We thought that Nix on Nixon and the end of involvement in the Viet Nam 'conflict' was taking us to better times, the dawning of the Age of Aquarius. Little did we suspect that TPTB would stop at nothing to put an end to all those unprofitable feelings peace and love.
Looking back, up until 1953, it is said that Tehran was a very nice place, a world class destination with liberal ideas, great universities, and women's rights. It gets so confusing, doesn't it? Seventy years ago the powers that be forced them to change and now tptb want to destroy them for what they've become. In a word it is trumpian in nature.

One generation was on the way to a wonderful world then the repubs started winning. I don't know what so many found bad about peace and love and care for one another.

(10,679 posts)...this evening, I just got around to watching the 3/22/26 episode of 60 Minutes, and had an odd feeling.
1st segment was on "rare earth" minerals, and how China has a monopoly (north of 90%) of refined rare earth minerals. We all know how important these minerals are, and how they are in much of the tech we enjoy today. The story focused on the Mountain Pass Mine in Nevada/California, the only active rare earth mineral mine in the U.S. The mine had been closed down for years and has been revitalized by a couple of hedge fund/venture capital managers. The story suggested that Trump had insisted on expanding the mine, with the US gov't taking a 15% cut of the profit.
(Oh, the wise Trump, building the American economy)
The 2nd segment was on shipbuilding, and how the U.S. produces almost no big ships anymore. China is #1, South Korea #2. The story also not so subtly said that Trump was insisting on re-building the U.S. ship-building capability. South Korea is putting up billions to rework the shipyard at Philadelphia.
(Trump again "bringin' back industry" )
So those first two segments seemed to be trying to leave the image in your mind of Trump doing good things for America, with no mention of all of his warts. I could feel the breeze from the propaganda.
You know, if Trump actually DOES anything good for the people of the U.S. and not just for himself or his fetid family, that would be a good thing. I could acknowledge that. I frankly don't believe Trump ever does ANYTHING for the benefit of the whole and not just hisself.

Funny, at the same time, (and this is not connected to the 60 Minutes program), there is a story from Ohio, I believe, where the last big maker of musical instruments was closing down in the U.S. and moving to China, or, simply contracting with China to build the instruments. Trump had told the company he was going to "fix" it, but no fix came, and there go a good number of jobs, going overseas. Shipping jobs overseas, making America First.

(17,441 posts)fascists. We are in deep shit when 60 Minutes can no longer be trusted. But being that it's CBS, we could see this coming. It just finally got here these last couple months.

(9,096 posts)to see what has happened is tragic to so many of us who grew up with Murrow etc. The recent decision to kill CBS Radio was devastating. My first "electronics" foray as a kid was to order the little "magic" AM radio from an ad in the back of Popular Mechanics. The cost was like $1.00+ and it was a little black plastic box about as big as a matchbook with a little wire with an earpiece to insert in your ear. Another wire had an alligator clip to attach to any steel or copper metal that was grounded. It also had a little slide out antenna. There were no controls or anything. You just got whatever it picked up.
So they recommended clipping to the metal finger-stop on the desk phone. In those days there were only those black phones on a table or desk. So that grounded well and then you slid the antenna in and out, much like turning the dial on the radio, until you picked up a radio station. I lived in the sticks and so the only station I got that was listenable was CBS Radio and it came in strong and clear.
Every morning I would get up early and go by my father's desk and hook up my "magic" radio and listen to the business news and news out of Washington and major news around the nation. My "window to the world" brought to me by the wonderful folks at CBS Radio.
