He has bragged about his poll numbers and vote totals for the past decade. He wants to be popular, and hence tells the lies he thinks will make the people he fools love him. He knows that the nature of his final two years depends upon his popularity, since he wants maga to vote in the mid-terms. He knows their candidates did worse than expected in the 2018 mid-terms, and that there is a real chance they will do worse this year. Thus, the last thing he wants is a failure that would be compared to President Carter's rescue attempt.

The single most unbelievable aspect of Trump's "following," for me, is that the guy is incredibly simplistic, transparent, and one dimensional.

Anyone who'd like to could "understand" Trump without a working knowledge of Zen, you know?

And as much as I admire Mary Trump for regularly speaking out about her uncle to the public, I can't remember a single observation of hers that "shed new light" on what I already sensed and / or knew.

For some reason, people keep looking for the intricacies of his words and deeds and it still comes back to his being a cruel, selfish, heartless, gluttonous pig who praises those who are "loyal" to him one minute, then he's slitting their throats the next.
