Republicans Fear a Big Mistake on Reconciliation

“Senate Republicans are taking their first steps this week to pass a narrow reconciliation bill that includes money for agencies in charge of immigration enforcement at the center of a funding dispute with Democrats,” NOTUS reports.

“A number of Republican senators, however, believe the strategy could be a mistake if leadership doesn’t broaden the bill’s scope to address voter concerns about the economy and affordability, reflecting widespread anxiety in the party about its odds of retaining control of Congress after the November midterm elections.”

Applegrove: the whole GOP agenda is to make sure the middle and working classes don't have any money to fight for middle class things like childcare or Medicare for all. Or Obamacare and Medicaid. To keep democrats from winning and actually making the oligarchs pay some taxes or regulate the environment in a way that saves lives. Don't look for them to do anything about affordability any time soon.

1. Political animals trying to save their own hides normally seek to "course correct"...

... when public sentiment turns so profoundly against an agenda.

But that is not the felon's way.

The felon demands doubling-down on the hated agenda. And for the most part, the U.S. House and Senate have complied with those demands.

However, as the election looms ever closer, we may see more balking on the "double-down" demands and more political animal "course correct" instincts kicking in, which could actually result in some rollbacks of the most egregious cuts or reductions of the insane ICE increase. This is the time to work to get people to put as much pressure as possible on their Republican lawmakers NOW as they move into the reconciliation process. Demand rollback of the most egregious MAGA Murder Budget cuts, demand reductions in ICE funding to previous levels.

I'm not counting on seeing any "course corrections." But I'm not counting out the possibility either. Whether you think it is feasible or not, they need to hear from constituents. We can't let them claim "none of my constitutions are angry with the budget reconciliation we passed last year."

We have seen some self-preservation revolts. Both the House and Senate said "FU felon" on his 25% Canadian tariffs. The Senate said FU when they voted to block his "emergency" global tariffs and advanced the bill to require Congressional authorization for military action in Venezuela after the raid. We can't rule out the possibility that we may see more self-preservation revolts in other areas.

And with independents and republicans we could be successful. Boots on the ground!

5. Absolutely! And I left off the most important demand: Roll back tax cuts on people who earn over $250,000!!!

...to help cover restoration of snap, wic, and medicaid and restore enhanced obamacare subsidies to previous levels (at a minimum!!).
