Several weeks ago, after the huge No Kings ralley on Mar. 18, Rachel Maddow had the No Kings organizers on her show.
The gist of it was this: We KNOW the Republicans will try to cheat or otherwise overturn the upcoming midterm elections so the billionaire robber barons can stay in power and continue to impose authoritarian bullshit on us.
They set up a national strike on May 1, 2026 where they are asking ALL OF US to refrain from work, school or shopping on this day.
The reason advanced for this is that when the Republicans DO WHAT WE KNOW THEY ARE PLANNING in November to fuck up our election, we will have to really go on a multi-day, or even multi-week boycott of pretty much everything.
So, I am reminding the thousands of people on this site to honor this for the preservation of our republic. Because if we don't want a ditto copy of the Orban regime here, which is what the Yarvin-Thiel-Musk-Vance crowd are trying to impose, then we need to begin throwing wrenches in that machine.
That is all.

(6,323 posts)General strikes are always doomed to fall in the US because a huge chunk of the country is one absence away from being fired. Were kept subservient through our jobs, and, asking people to risk being fired is asking way too much of them.
This is going to fail badly. Awful decision to even try this, honestly. They could have just had nationwide protests the next day.

(15,533 posts)excuse us from trying it anyway. Every single person must do what they can, when they can, to save the republic or else we will end up with a fascistic Orban-type regime, which is EXACTLY what the authors of Project 2025 want.

(4,853 posts)of the US "left" for too many years, since the Reagan drubbing. Look where it has gotten us.
Yes, for a variety of reasons many people can't delete work that day. That illustrates the degree to which we have sunk into slavery. So should we just give up and shrug? "We meant well, but..."
There are degrees of participation. At the very least we can refuse to buy anything that day. Many people who must labor may be able to labor slowly, or work to rule. We can look stupid on demand and make them bossplain things. We don't have to be peak efficient. We may not be able to stop everything, but if we can put a measurable dent in their profits -by our choice- we'll get their attention
Remember, May 1 is the global Labor Day. The labor movement which gave us the weekend and the 40-hour week learned many ways to pressure the ruling class, who will never listen to simple sweet reason. They can ignore or shoot protest. Think of the Statue Of Liberty in police chains in California on No Kings - a stark image. The rulers ARE vulnerable in the pocketbook. They can only rule over us with our consent, even if that consent is passive.
We showed them populace numbers on No Kings. Now we must show them pocketbook numbers.
