I knew SCOTUS would use this case to beat the Voting Rights Act to within an inch of its life but I did not anticipate the disgust I feel about the decision. It's right up there with the 2024 election and for that reason I don't even want to follow anymore political news today.

(38,786 posts)As soon as Dems regain sufficient power, they must expand SCOTUS and appoint reasonable people. By that time, if we're lucky, they can replace Alito and Thomas too.

(3,356 posts)pass another Voting Rights Act that includes a provision that nothing in the act is subject to federal court review.

but I respectfully have to disagree. I dont think there is anything in our constitution that prevents Congress from including a provision in a law that it passes that specifically states that this law is exempt from court review. The fact that it isnt done is a self-imposed restraint by Congress.
Im hoping that someone more knowledgeable in this area will weigh in on the accuracy of my assertion.
There is actually nothing in our federal constitution that specifically grants the court the power of judicial review. It is implied by the notion of a written constitution and the rule of law. (See linked reference). It is a power that the court granted itself (Marbury v Madison, 1803).

(1,940 posts)Day after day after day, the atrocities never stop. It's too much. Every evening, I tell myself tomorrow will be a TFD (Trump free day), and yet my need to be informed leads me to DU and other credible sites.
There is so little blow back, so little accountability. It is disheartening. It takes a toll. The country I have loved all my life is being destroyed before my eyes.

(17,657 posts)In a 6-3 ruling, the courts conservative majority found that the district, represented by Democrat Cleo Fields, relied too heavily on race. Chief Justice John Roberts had described the district as a snake that stretches more than 200 miles (320 kilometers) to link parts of the Shreveport, Alexandria, Lafayette and Baton Rouge areas.
Justice Roberts is a deeply despicable human being.
And it is a pattern. It is never just about the dusky gopher frog:

(169 posts)I too was leveled this morning at the USSC ruling. We are all so tired.
Taking a break to protect your peace and to fortify is good self care.
Hang in here everyone.

(15,814 posts)It serves no purpose at this point to blame those who voted 3rd party or stayed home, but this IS a lesson going forward that presidential elections are also about the Supreme Court.
We would be in a very different place if Hillary was elected and appointed three Supreme Court Justices instead of you know who.
I am farther to the left than many, but this is why I have always considered DUs TOS my line in the sand re pragmatism.
The US is a one party country as the Democratic party is the only sane/civilized option.

(15,814 posts)Yes, in the sense that the Republican Party is ruled by a treasonous kleptocrat tearing the US Constitution to shreds.
However, One Party rule in principle is not a good system -- though at this time it is necessary to save the US from the evils of authoritarianism.
Nor has the Two Party system served us well. At the very least, I would like to see Instant Runoff (ranked choice) voting to ensure voting for a 3rd party candidate does not put your last choice in office.
Other necessary reforms include ending gerrymandering altogether; stop voter suppression in all forms while ensuring secure and accurate tabulation of ballots; eliminating the Electoral College; and end the system of legalized bribery inherent in campaigns financed by billionaires, corporations, and other special interests.

(17,657 posts)No argument there.
Everything exists in its most diseased form now. I have seen this divide and rule, vote bank politics in India long enough to know there is no real left in that just whether corrupt corporations buying off a left for a form of broken state capitalism without regulatory oversight, enforcement of environmental and labor laws, guarding of womens and civil rights, separation of church and state or the libertarian/conservative disease.
You had things that were working at least somewhat in the US and it is all the better stuff that has been systematically dismantled.
I have seen this for 15 years with no relief in sight in two countries and trickle down infonomics is hell. Tired epiphanies that anger you after your distrait mind figures it out in disgust and it is exactly as lame and pathetic as you thought it was.

(17,657 posts)I woke up in the middle of the night and read this, but it is only just hitting me how bad this is as the spate of bad news.
I feel like I did when Roe v Wade was taken down by Alito in 2022.
Alito really is a spiteful little man. Troy Farah of Salon often says our primate brains are not meant to handle this and he is correct.
Because this is really bad even if you are not American. It is really bad even if you are not black. It is really bad even if you are not poor. The same way overturning Roe was bad even if you are male.
But it seems so hard to communicate and there is always so much pseudo novelty that is deceitful as you will keep coming back to all your original hunches except it takes longer and okay you will have a more explicit, reinforced idea of why you vote or think as you do when you have any convictions that are not purely based in self serving opportunism ie Trumps transactionalism, but you will be older and poorer.
It is such a waste of time. The human brains processing hijacked to come back to the same conclusions it already arrived at over and over. It wont change anyone elses hearts or minds unless you are misguided enough to..what was it Bob Dylans Its alright ma.. covered? All that.
But you will have lost a lot of time which the GOP and the fossil fuel companies, big agra and the tech sector want.
