Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves (R) said Wednesday that Republicans are planning to redraw the states congressional map and dismantle the states lone majority-Black district by 2027.
The state has a higher share of Black residents 38% than any other in the U.S.
While Reeves backed off an immediate redistricting push before the 2026 midterms, his remarks signal that Republicans plan to relentlessly redraw electoral maps and undermine Black voting power across the South after a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Louisiana v. Callais gutted the Voting Rights Act last month.
Speaking on a Mississippi radio show, Reeves made clear that congressional redistricting remains a priority even as he canceled a planned special session to redraw the states Supreme Court districts following a federal appeals court ruling.

(27,427 posts)In theory I agree with expansion, but in a previous discussion whomever pointed out if The Dems get back in power; expand the court, if the repugs get back they'll do the same... (and need a bigger chamber!)
Bit more complex than that but.... so idk a potential solution

(24,218 posts)After all, republicans never govern that way.
If Dems expand the court and govern fearlessly, unhesitatingly and progressively, Republicans wont get a trifecta for decades.

And really broadcast aims, efforts, and achievements through all media including various social media.
Get some younger savvy staffers who 1) can do it, 2) teach willing older staffers those ropes, too! 👍

(28,773 posts)What keeps them from expanding the court right now?

(24,218 posts)And it would be seen as a brazen power grab, further damaging them in the midterms.
They are getting what they want from the current majority, so the need to expand is nonexistent.
After ten years of Trumps chaos and destruction, I think expanding the court in 2029 would have far less political risk to Dems than it would for republicans if they expanded now.

(490 posts)So when have they expanded the court or killed the filibuster?
The assumption that democrats could keep Republicans out of power for decades ignores all of the past 50 years of US political history.

And of course "Taint" Reeves was a member of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity during college. For those not aware of this particular fraternity, the KA's 'spiritual founder' is the traitor Robert Edward Lee: https://www.kappaalphaorder.org/about/history/robert-e-lee/
