One thing I love about DU is that you never know how broad of an audience your essays and postings might reach. You might spend all day on an essay and get 5 recs and 2 comments. Then you write something else that takes two minutes of frantic angry typing that suddenly is on the front page with a gazillion comments.
In my early days of DU I remember seeing one of my DU posts being republished on a larger website and I was really thrilled. My recent post "That crying you hear is the Republican Party. That crunching you hear is Obama eating their lunch" (which is number two on the Greatest Threads and sitting pretty on the front page of DU http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022117532 ) just had a wonderful thing happen. Stephanie Miller read some of the post on air. I did not get to hear it and I am not sure how much got read but I am very very very proud to say this:
I am always very grateful when I see the comments and recs on my DU posts. Not all of my posts are smart or pretty but I do try to write out of the box and share thoughtful essays on politics and life in general. I share personal information and opinions and I put myself out there to take a beating sometimes. But DU is a unique voice in the political system. We are, in many ways, all that is left of the tradition of the press holding government responsible. I have noticed that DU often breaks stories or is the venue that small-town issues or regional politics often break nationally. Hell, Earl G. can often change the tenor of a national issue with one picture and a smarmy (sorry) comment.
I am very proud to be part of DU. I am proud that my writings and musings often generate a conversation that often opens my eyes up further and further with each comment.
If you heard the Stephanie Miller broadcast, I would love to hear how it went and what the reaction was, if any. Like I said, I missed it, but I'm thrilled to be part of the conversation!!!! If anyone can fill me in, I'd love to hear it. (edit: I've been told she read about half of my post--wow--it was a long essay)
DU ROCKS. (and, the best part of my post being shared is I'd made a little plug for Wishadoo on the bottom of the post so hopefully Wishadoo will get a little traffic. They are trying to help a DUer pay to fix his daughter's wheelchair van so I can only hope that a few more people might donate to make this happen. (4,359 posts)The advertising money was HUGE but I hated it. So I quit and swore I would never write for a living again. At least not that kind of writing.
I think I got excited to hear she read my essay because, generally, I still have that speech writing style that makes much more sense when it is read outloud vs. in your head reading. Another DUer said she read it to her husband.
So, it has been a really fun day for me, to say the least. :0)

(47,992 posts)I'm mostly a commenter around here. I'm comfortable with that role, because I'm good at asking questions.
So, I really value those of you who put your time and effort into developing a piece fully.
Maybe I should take up a project of my own, but for the time being I'm just glad to see good stuff that is also a pleasure to read.
DonRedwood
(4,359 posts)And always appreciate it when people share. Though, it has been difficult with all the rape issues as of late. So many people share such in depth painful memories in the comments section and I feel awful to read some of those and not leave a supportive comment for each and every person sharing. It seems wrong to read something so personal and not acknowledge it but it seems crazy to leave 30 comments about comments on someone else's post.
But the comments are where I do much of my learning and where I have found many of my favorite DUers. CaliforniaPeggy very rarely posts OPs but her comments have made her a favorite. Lol...I even have a few favorites who seem to bust my chops on every single post...but, they have taught me think more carefully, not judge too quickly and, certainly, to be a better typer.

(23,736 posts)"The crying you hear is the Republican Party who has just come to the realization that they have had their asses handed to them on a plate.
This is the new Republican World:
They are at an all-time low in unpopularity. Root canals and Republicans are loved equally in the United States.
They are in the middle of a civil war. Neither side can win without the support of the other. Their united front that has stayed firm from the Reagan area until now just fell apart.
"The Republican hate for Obama has blinded them. They have reached this pinnacle of power through carefully hiding their agenda behind propaganda and Fox News. President Obama lured them out into the open with his carefully crafted chess game where he played the weak bird with the broken wing. Flap, flap, "look at me! I'm practically a lame duck!" Obama lured them out into the open and in their haste to not get trapped, he managed to trip them up and split their party."
"The crazy thing about this is that Obama set this trap last year. Remember, the Republicans came out of the first fiscal cliff hurting. It was like watching some idiot on YouTube shooting himself in the foot. So, Obama agreed to put things off and stepped back. I can't help but wonder if he didn't think to himself "These dillweeds just did it once. I wonder if they would fall for it again?" See, he set the same trap twice. And the Republicans walked right into it and just shot themselves in the other foot. And, WTF? Did Obama just manage to get them to agree to shoot themselves again in a few months when we go through this again? My brother used to try to talk me into touching the electric fence when I was a kid. He got me to do it once. He got my less bright cousin to do it twice. Obama just talked them into touching the fence a third time. "
"So, that crying you hear is the Republican Party crying because their huge over-reaches, brought on by what they thought was a broken-winged lame duck President (luring them out again--flap flap), have finally brought their party to a civil war. They have just passed taxes. Leadership is under question. They feel like they did when they announced Romney didn't win afterall."

(81,441 posts)Congrats, DonRedwood!!! I really appreciated that original post of yours - it does INDEED deserve a much wider audience! It's important that MORE of this gets out. The better to reinforce some shaky people who feel this way, too, but think they're all alone out there. They need to know that they are anything BUT alone in their feelings.
Part of our problem in this country, for a LONG time, has been that ALL WE'VE BEEN HEARING since the 90s is NON-STOP CONservative claptrap, lies, distortions, misrepresentations of what it means to be a liberal, hell - they don't even respect the very name of our party! That's been going on, around the clock, on radio and then also on cable outlets like Pox Noise and CNN which scrambles to bring on as much wrong-of-center representation on camera as though they were trying to be Pox Noise Lite. That audience now, though, is dead and dying, as we've all since realized.

I have to confess that I work out of the home and always have either Current or Msnbc on as background noise & when I hear something that catches my interest, I tune into what was being said.

O'Reilly speaking at a benefit for The Natl Center for Missing & Exploited Children
in my town - Naples Florida. Someone wrote a letter to the editor about how crazy this is.
First, they have Mark Foley as an ombudsman - NOW Bill O'Reilly is involved with them. When are they going to learn? They really need to look into this group. AND to top it all off - Foley is from this area so you'd think they'd be very carful in selecting people who are involved with their group.
Maybe they think they are supposed to actually exploit and abuse the children instead of fighting against it.

Escape was easy?
Editor, Daily News:
Brent Battens Sunday column quoted Bill OReillys remarks on national TV about the recently rescued 14-year-old Shawn Hornbeck in Missouri.
Battens article is quoted here: In a Jan. 17 commentary, OReilly intimated that Hornbeck was complicit in his own captivity by not taking one of the many chances he had to escape. It is hard for me to believe that a normal kid would stay in a horrible environment when escape was easy, especially if the child had confidence in his parents, OReilly said.
These comments by OReilly are not only totally insensitive, but show a complete lack of understanding about the dynamics of the relationships between child victims and their kidnappers.
And this is the man who has been invited to speak at a charity dinner here in Naples on March 9 for the benefit of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children?

John Walsh to replace Bill O'Reilly as keynote speaker at NCMEC event
Reported by Chrish - February 9, 2007 -
From the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children website, Collier County Florida:
Statement
Collier County, Florida Branch

In response to the numerous e-mails and inquiries we have received, we are providing the following update regarding the Collier County, Florida branch fundraising dinner scheduled for March 9, 2007 in Naples, Florida. Bill OReilly, host of The OReilly Factor, will not be a speaker at the dinner. The dinner will be held as scheduled. John Walsh, host of Americas Most Wanted, will be the keynote speaker.

DonRedwood
(4,359 posts)but you can call it propaganda if it makes you happy.
hfojvt
(37,573 posts)is that first it is disseminated
Obama claims that keeping 78% of the Bush tax cuts is a "middle class" tax relief.
Other people swallow this propaganda because there are very few voices saying "the Emperor has no clothes".
And even when those voices speak up, they are just shouted down and jeered back into silence.
Then the people who have swallowed the propaganda, repeat it as their own opinion.
Then it gets put on the radio so gullible listeners will believe it too.
In this manner, the lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has even put its boots on.
Especially when the lie benefits the powerful.
Does it make me happy that my homies on DU play a part in this farce?
Not in the slightest. Quite the opposite.
And THAT is my opinion. I see what I see.
