The rule is an "absolute majority of the members present and voting" is necessary to be elected Speaker.

(20,226 posts)some 40 years ago - has been posting things about how Boehner is a closet leftist and has no backbone to stand up to Obama's extreme socialist agenda - So I guess these attitudes are pretty mainstream in the current Republican Party. The 2012 election only confirmed their beliefs that the Republicans lose because of a combination of voter fraud and the GOP being hijacked by liberals like McCain, Romney and Boehner. I suspect close to half or more registered Republicans beleive this firmly.
