(6,633 posts)They scream about freedom, forgetting that 'a necessitous man is not a free man'.
The Danish are happier because they are not necessitous.

(2,620 posts)30-40 years ago. We went to the trouble of itemizing all of the different taxes we pay, that we don't even think about. There are about 20-30 line items........Turns out he was 100% correct, and I am sure it is far far more now, than then.....

(22,722 posts)Die early because you can't afford your meds in old age? Sell off all your assets to go Medicaid end of life leaving nothing for your children? Get exploited by an economic system designed to empty your pockets no matter how hard you've worked all your life? Have the risk of retirement savings put entirely on you (401K instead of the old defined benefit), other than the pittance you get from Social Security? In the wealthiest nation the planet has ever seen? That's all you get? Pathetic, really.
So again, freedom to do what?

(360 posts)Praise to Bob Marley and many others for repeating this old proverb. Selfishness and greed leads to violence and war. When will the wealthy captains of industry realize that fair taxation is a benefit to all including them because a peaceful and stable society makes for a better business climate.

(2,296 posts)The players are called profiteers.
The idea is to find ways to make more money, increase one's wealth beyond that of everyone else. Lower taxes means fewer government (nonprofit) services and more opportunities for the profiteers to sell services for a profit. For example, profiteers have been trying to get rid of Medicare for years because it provides medical services that do not enrich medical insurance companies. Except, of course, the profiteers have found a way to make a profit using Medicare, called Medicare Advantage Plans.
Our game even attracts players from other countries. Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch are among the best known.
Even though most of the profiteers appear to be totally amoral, they often make powerful use of religious pawns. They are especially good at provoking fear inventing boogie men like WOKE. HA!
They can be very insidious at unearthing and amplifying racism. The current target enemy is DEI.
In this country, people can do almost anything except interfere with profit making.
One of our most basic values statements is "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." It is very sad that happiness has come to mean maximum wealth for so many people.

And the countries that Trump wants part of US, have better healthcare than we do.
GOP is already on record that they do not want universal healthcare.
