Candace Owens urges audience read antisemitic book, asserts Jews controlled slave trade
Political commentator Candace Owens urged her audience to read a 19th-century antisemitic book and accused Jews of orchestrating the transatlantic slave trade and racial conflict between Caucasian and African Americans during her YouTube show over the weekend.

“And I’ve learned what’s in that Talmud,” Owens continued, holding up an English copy of Der Talmudjude. “I encourage other people at home to learn what is in that Talmud so that you know what Ben thinks of you because he doesn’t just hate me, he hates you, too, white men. He hates all black people.”

Der Talmudjude, by anti-Jewish German Catholic theologian August Rohling, claimed that the Talmud commanded Jews to steal, lie, cheat, and kill Christians.
Rohling had repeatedly spread the libel that Jews consumed human blood in murder rituals. The theologian’s scholarship was cast into doubt during a failed libel suit against one of his detractors, but Der Talmudjude has remained a mainstay of antisemitic texts.
Owens spread other conspiracy theories as well, saying that the American slave trade was controlled by Jews. She called on black Americans to turn their ire on Jews instead of holding grudges against white Americans. The podcast host further indicated the belief that Jews were manipulating different religious and ethnic groups to fight one another.

The book first appeared when Bismarck inaugurated his anti-Catholic legislation, as a retort to the attacks made by liberal journals on the dogma of papal infallibility and on Jesuitic textbooks.[1] The book was extensively quoted by the Catholic press, but it did not become a political force until the appearance of anti-Semitism, and the Tiszaeszlár Affair in 1883. Franz Delitzsch defended Judaism against the attacks of Rohling. At the same time Josef Samuel Bloch wrote articles in which he accused Rohling of ignorance and of forgery of the texts. Rohling sued Bloch for libel, but withdrew the suit at the last moment. Later on he greeted the appearance of Zionism as the solution of the Jewish question and wrote a pamphlet against Güdemann's "Das Judenthum in Seinen Grundzügen," etc.

Der Talmudjude remained a popular text well in to the 1930s. The Nazi publicist Julius Streicher drew on Rohling's arguments in his antisemitic newspaper Der Stürmer.[2]

This is partly a story about conservatives creating a monster they can’t control. Owens, after all, has been saying nutty things for a long time. In 2019 she left her job as communications director of Turning Point not long after arguing that Hitler’s real sin was globalism, not nationalism. (“If Hitler just wanted to make Germany great,” she said, it would have been fine.) Rather than ostracize her, however, powerful conservative organizations cultivated her. Republicans invited her to testify before Congress about why white nationalism wasn’t a problem. In 2020 Shapiro hired her at The Daily Wire, his media company, which is where she began her podcast. (They split in 2024 over her increasingly antisemitic views.) Having elevated her in large part for her willingness to say outrageous things about her opponents, people on the right are now surprised by her willingness to say outrageous things about them.

Owens especially has taken this most elemental of paranoid fixations and turned it into something between a soap opera and a live-action role-playing game. “It’s necessary for people to recognize how greatly evil these Zionists are,” Owens said on her podcast this week, describing them as “Trotskyites” who employ Soviet techniques of mind control. The implication is that if you reject her, you’re falling into their trap.
